Auto To Manual
Wasnt Really Sure where to put this so I picked General,
Anyone change out there Auto to a Manual?
Just wandering trying to get ideas, I have an Automatic and My brother just got his RS 2.0 in a 5spd and the 5sp really puts the fun back in driving one of these..
Just Curious if anyone has or what would be involved in doing so..

I was just asking a question if anyone had done it before, I did plan and I did want a 5spd but the dealers around here only had autos and I wasnt able to wait to order one like I orginally wanted
I can do all the work myself, I converted my Z24 Cavalier from an Auto to a 5spd in two days.. I dont think its absolutely unheard of to have this done to the scion!
ECU / Console and Shifter / Tranny I know would be the main things I need I was just hoping to get some responses as to what else I may need before I jump into this..

tranny (possibly mounts if different)
clutch
flywheel (maybe)
pedal assembly
shifter/cables
ecu
hydraulic assembly
axles (possibly, if different)
Find an exploded parts diagram and start comparing. The labor involved isn't that bad, the compiling of parts is the hardest part.
Good luck if you decide to go through with it! If you decide it's too much and want to increase the "fun" of the auto, look into a manual valve body or a shift kit.

My Prev vehicle sold so I didnt have a ride to get back and forth to work and At the time I worked an hour away so I needed something off the lot, They had 3 auto's on the lot that I got mine from. I checked and the other dealer and several others around but I needed to get a car that day..
Its no big deal I guess, Ill just continue on modding it and one day possibly do this conversion like I want. Dont get me wrong I love the auto but the 5spd is more fun to drive

Something tells me that it's going to be a bit more involved than just swapping out the trans, axels, etc. I've never done an auto to manual change but unless I'm mistaken isn't there a number of emission and timing controls used to actuate the shifting of the auto that will be removed and need to be replaced by the manual trans counterparts?
Admittedly I'm seeing the kind of things that are generally found on 60's and 70's cars that I have rebuilt over the years. It just seems to be a bit more involved to end up with the same thing as what the factory would have put together to begin with.
Also, what about some of the other items such as the shift indicator thing in the dash that lights up. Isn't that keyed to what kind of transnission is in the car?

You could just take the shaved doors/hatch off your current scion and put 'em on the new one. It wouldn't be that hard to do the swap.
The air ride would be a PITA to switch over, but you'd probably spend more converting the transmission than just replacing the thing.

I dont get why we have to preach to him? He got first an auto and now he wants a manual transmission, no need to be so negative, I for once took this route on my Accord, and was not dissapointed, the only opinion I could give is, research, research the hell out of the proyect before you even take one screw out... and if its worth to you... then go ahead.....

It's not that it can't be done, it's just not really practical on such a new model vehicle. There's not as many in the junkyard like the Hondas people are comparing the job to. The used japanese trannys, if available, would probably be geared differently.
Are we even sure the only differences between the two models are parts swappable?
with the great resale value on these things right now, I just can't see it being worth it. But then again, I love this little auto tranny
