The 5-speed turns about 500 rpm more than the auto at 70 mph. The rub is the manual is more fun and accelrates better. In fact, 4th gear has really good pickup. I believe Toyota designed this for the congestion of Japanese traffic where topend is not necessarily a big concern. I drive 50% of my time between 55 and 65 mph and shift at near the recommended points (15, 25,40, 45) and get between 32 and 34 mpg.
Note: If you drive hard you mileage will take a BIG hit as I've noticed.
