Default Automotive Glass Repair?

Well, it wasn't if, but when my windshield would get cracked.

I drive 50 miles a day (at least), and I've got chips all over my hood...I've been "lucky"
a few times where I saw a rock coming at me and it missed the windshield and hit
the roof (where I have two huge panes of glass on my dual sunroof).

But today, almost as if I was watching it in slow motion, a golf ball sized rock hit
the windshield and left a small crack. No chip that I can see, but a 3mm X 4mm
plus sign shaped crack.

I've NEVER had glass damaged before, so I was hoping someone here in the forums
with more experience might recommend a company that's known for good auto glass
REPAIR. I've seen results of glass repair in the past, and been blow away, but that
was 12-14 years ago. I hope things have gotten better since then.

Can anyone reocmmend a (nation wide) shop, or is there a particular method I should
be requesting to repair the chip?

Any help is greatly apprecaited!!!

I can't really recommend a specific place, because most of them aren't national chains. There are a few shops around here that have a good reputation, but I'm pretty sure they are confined to this region. Your best bet would be to ask around where you live. I do suggest that you stick with a "auto glass only" shop instead of a general bodyshop. The glass shops do them all day long, every day. It just stands to reason that they'll be better at it. Also, make sure you check with your insurance agent. If you have the glass breakage rider under Comprehensive, it will be free with zero deductable.

On a side note: I see you're in Wheaton, IL. We were just out there to visit friends last week. They live in Geneva.

Yeah, I'm for sure sticking with an automotive glass shop,
and honestly, I'd want this repaired rather then replaced
which is what the insurance company may insist on for safety
reasons...I've seen some of the glass replacements, and they
scare me!

It may vary by state, but they will decide between repairing it or replacing it based on the size of the chip/crack, and whether or not it's in your field of view. Some repair jobs don't look too great. They basically put a glue-like sealant on it to keep the crack from growing, but it's always there.....in your face....taunting you.

I have Allstate with full glass coverage and I know that they will replace the windshield if the crack is in the driver's line of sight. If it's not, then depending on the size, they may just repair it. But with full glass and no deductable, i've had my Jeep windshield replaced 3 times, free.
