The strategy has, in many ways, succeeded. Toyota and its sister Lexus brand traditionally sell to older consumers. But Scion's average age is the youngest of any brand, analysts say.
Not as young as Toyota expected. By one calculation, the average Scion buyer is about 39, according to the Power Information Network, a subsidiary of automotive market research firm J.D. Power & Associates. For the Element, it's 43.
Many older buyers of the vehicles were likely drawn to them by their price. Others were probably buying for their children. Still others buy because they think the cars make them look or feel younger, said Tom Libby, a PIN analyst.

Same situation as optional...my parents bought mine for me also
There are two other xb's in my town that I know of, and both are owned by older people. Probably because they are affordable, good on gas, and easy to get into and out of.

At 48 I bought the wife (40) an xA cuz she liked it.
This year I got the xB cuz I wanted one!
Out of 16 cars we currently own, 12 are Chevy's, 2 Scion, 1 Toyota, and 1 ford.
Scions were the last two to be purchased. They are perfect for the small town we live in.

I'm 51 and finally got my Led Zepellin CD's back from my 15 year old son so I could load them onto my ipod and listen to it in the box on the ipod integrated HU...
I'm never growing old and my sons gonna have to buy his own box when the time comes. He's not gettin' this one.

Many of the xBs I see on the street are being driven by people who look my age. The car is a perfect second car for middle-aged folks. Add that to the number of parents signing the papers on behalf of their kids, and 39 becomes very unsurprising.

I purchased my xb due to several factors.(age 44)
Economy, i knew the price of gas was going up. My truck sucked gas badly and the xb saved me approx $100 month in gas.
Purchase price of vehicle was not bad.
Utility- with the sports/camping activity I do, it has plenty of room to load up with the back seats either down, or removed for specific trips.

38 year old fits profile
I bought a Tc last year and love it! I feel that it's a mid-life crisis option for those of us with moderate incomes...heh heh! Pushing the car through the corners, punching the gas, sunroof open, sound system cranked...well, you get idea...
