I took my xB to a local industrial park to play with getting better mpg. I got 91.5 mpg over 9.8 miles. That's after a 20 mile warmup at 72 mpg, and before a 5 mile drive home at 79 mpg.

how the hell are you guys getting such good mileage!? me i haven't done an official reading, but i'm going with a 30-31 mpg range or so. thats 75 percent highway. maybe 29 if i hit a lot of lights, and do more of a city drive. one source has the numbers listed at 31 city, and 35 highway. another has 27 city, and 31 highway. have to take a good reading when i do a complete interstate, and hopefully no traffic trip.

He is what you call a Hypermiler. Plus he has a manual transmission allowing for more controlled fuel consumption.

Also, don't let that 90MPG reading get to you! You must realize that was a trip consisting of only a few miles. Coasting easily gets MPGs into the 100-200.

Sentra is the king of the MPGs on these forums! Talk to him about anything "fuel usage".

Well, that's why I did it in an industrial park on a weekend. I was doing a 10-20 mph P&G. That's 3 seconds accelerating in 2nd gear to 20 mph, followed by 30 seconds of EOC gliding. It's not a usable technique for normal driving. I did it to see what my xB is capable of.

I calibrated my tires for distance last month, and realized (after 20,000 miles) that my tires have been off by 3.3% the whole time. My 91.5 mpg for 9.8 miles was actually 94.5 mpg for 10.1 miles! My lifetime average mpg with my xB is 48.8 mpg for 22,000 miles.

That's excellent, Jeff! I just drove my box to Utah for a wedding, and got 47.7, 54.2, 50.3, and 51.0 mpg on four fill-ups for the ~1700 mile trip. Total miles/total gas used = 50.9 mpg.
