cabin noise at freeway speeds
I just traded in my 6th gen accord v6. and got the xB. At 90 mph my accord was like a quiet like a tomb. At 70 in the xB 5th gear is around 3.5k RPM, (kinda loud). I know you can't compair the 2 aples to apples. Is it healthy,? I mean what does it do to your milage to cruise for long periods between 3-4k RPM?
(you gotta love the little growl of the DOHC when it's tryin' hard though)

I agree, the engine is loud. I was talking to my Dad (who is an asst. service mngr for Toyota) and asked him if he knew of a way to quiet it. Nothing yet, but he is working on some ideas. My 4-Runner was really quiet and it was a V6. But, I love the style of the xB and the gas mileage so it is worth it!!!

It feels like the natural speed the box wants to go is about 55 or 60. Ask it to go faster and your hearing about it. I felt like the natural speed on my Accord was about 75-80. Guess I'll just have to get used to the fact that the box ain't a luxury vehicle.

I drive 80 MPH almost everyday here in the Detroit area. I do a 10 mile strech on the freeway. The xB is fine at this speed and I have lots of pedal left for power when I need it. I think this is the main thing, not the RPM but the amount of work the engine has to do. Lower RPM at highway speed requires more power for acceleration etc. That is why V6's and V8"s are lower RPM. But on the other hand higher RPM can use more fuel. So it is a balance of havung enouigh power vs RPM. The power band of small engines also is at higher RPM.
4000 RPM sounds high at 80 MPH but there are mony other cars at that RPM or more out there. At first I alos thought was as issue but I not concerned at all now. I love the xB with a stick shift.
