Curt Trailer Hitch issues
I installed the trailer hitch made by Curt this weekend on my 2005 xB not in 15 minutes they state on the instructions but more like 2hrs. Problems encountered:
1. The packaging leaves something to be desired since Curt does not use any packing materials just the hitch inside the box. Needless to say the box gets to its destination in a rather sorry state.
2. The holes do not match up exactly so you must use a clamp or a crowbar to force the hitch brackets to align up with the holes on the vehicle frame.
3. The instructions fail to mention that the hitch bracket goes over the stock muffler. I figured out that by removing the screws on the lower bumper cover you could get the hitch bracket to slip over the muffler pipe.
4. The passenger side bumper bracket rubs on the trailer hitch rail and it makes a squeaking sound if you don't isolate it with some foam or a piece of rubber.
5. When backing up from semi steep driveway the trailer hitch rubs on the road. The very first time it happened the soft metal frame on the passenger side of my xB got dented. Now the trailer hitch sits slightly twisted to the passenger side.
All this and the only thing I wanted was a way to transport up to four bicycles to the local parks using a hitch mounted bike rack.

I have had a Curt hitch on my 2005 a couple of years.
I think your hitch may have been bent slightly during shipping. I had similiar
problems with a hitch for my truck - I agree about their packaging - I called Curt
and they could have not been any nicer. They replaced it easily., they even checked their jig to be sure it was not an error in manufacturing.
On my XB I did not have to put any foam and there is no rubbing. There is a little bit of a trick to get it in - but it lines up easily. I have bottomed out
a number of times - but it never does any damage to the vehicle.
You may want to order another hitch and return the one you have!

Yeah I'm not to impressed with the Curt hitch. Its a little rough.
With a little more thought they could of shortened the receiver and saved a lot of speed bump grief.
Its still a good place to start vs from scratch. I made some changes to my mine so I could lower the box and use an after market can muffler.

I looked further into the issue with the bent hitch and quickly found the problem. Curt needs to check their welding robot eyes since the hitch was not welded correctly. The receiver part of the hitch and the associated stiffening parts were all welded with a hard twist to the right. I will contact Curt directly to get it replaced. I'm so glad that it was not due to a bent frame on the box.

Update:
I sent an email to Hitch Source along with detailed pictures showing them manufacturing problems with the hitch I received; they in turn put me in contact with Curt who also saw the pictures of their defective product. Curt opted to send me a new replacement hitch without further cost to me, along with freight pre-paid shipping labels for me to return the defective product back to them. Way cool!
