gas mileage?

I am only getting 24 MPG. On a good day it is 27, but I am not the lightest guy in the world. I think weight has alot to do with it. Not to mention, I put my wife and two kids in there quite often.

I'm getting 28 - 28.5 ish. I log all my gas purchases. I'm just past 4500 miles on the speedo. Got it with 4 mi. on it 05/27?/06.
I drive the hell out of it - mostly on the highway. I stayed under 70 the first 500 miles, b/c I'm old school like that. It's killing me to wait 5k miles for an oil change too. That just ain't right.
Anyways - I get less than what the sticker said,, but you have to figure the sticker rating is premium gas, going downhill, on ice, with a tailwind, 4 fat people, rolling in neutral.
I traded in a 2001 Expedition with maybe 11mpg, so I'm not _____in.

gas mileage
As most of us have learned, our boxs are sensitive to many theing. Rotating mass of wheels, extra weight being carried, headwinds, elevation changes when driving (up and down hills, etc), and weight of foot on gas peddle to name a few. I drive conservitive and average 33-35 on summer blend of gas. I also wait till I'm down to a 1/4 tank before filling up. I have kept fuel mileage records since getting my box with 3 miles on it. Worst tank was 28.7mpg (first tank), best tank was 41mpg. I now have 30k miles on it. I drive and automatic and cover 70 miles to work and back, passing through 2 towns and speed varies from 30 mph to 55 mph. All interstate at 70-75 mph my mileage drops to 31-32 mpg. My profile shows what few things I have changed.

Even with a fairly aggressive driving style, I've never done worse than 29mpg. It's important to use the proper grade of fuel, 87 octane, to get the best from our high compression motors. That's midgrade around here. Otherwise, the knock sensor backs off on the ignition timing, which hurts both mileage and performance...

I got 24-27 mpg for the first 6 tanks or so after I bought mine new, and that was easy driving. It kind of annoyed me that it wasn't better, but it beat the 12 mpg my truck gets, so I didn't complain.
After those first tanks, it went right back up. 90% city driving now I get 30+ mpg, 70-80 on the freeway and always with AC on (it's been hot). I took a trip to SF last weekend and cruised up from my house, drove the car fully loaded down with people around the city and to the zoo, fisherman's wharf, etc,. 2 days ago I filled up again and got 42.8 mpg.
I'm still blown away.

If you don't need to pay for the extra performance, use 87, on which the 2006 xB was down-rated to 103 HP.
Regular gas around here is 87, and I have never seen anything lower. Plus is 89. Premium is 91-92-93, depending on the brand.

Daily driving = 35 mpg, consistently.
Long trip on 2-lane highway = 37 mpg.
Long trip on Interstate - 43 mpg.
Day spent around and on a racetrack = 23 mpg.
The PCU is the most significant factor in mileage (pedal control unit).
