Getting screwed by the brakes
Just looking for any input of any kind - My '05 xB just hit 14,000 miles, and the brakes started grinding. No squeak or anything first, it went straight to metal-on-metal. I first heard the grind late Apr. 4, after the dealership was closed. So, the morning of Apr. 5, I called to schedule an appointment to get my brakes done, and they told me that they couldn't do it that day. That struck me as wierd, but whatever. I spent the fifth driving the same distance I normally do, but I'd downshift more, and not brake as hard, and from slower speeds. Now it's the 6th, I'm actually posting from the dealership, waiting for a ride home, because 45 minutes after I handed them my keys, they told me that they didn't have the pads (So they can't fix xAs, xBs, or echos?). So my first reaction was to drive home, and bring it in the next day, and not drive it in between, but they have told me that I have already ruined one of the rotors, and it is unsafe to drive. They refuse to rent me a car, because I'm 18. The quote is $450 for new pads, 1 new rotor, and adjustment of the rear brakes. There are so many things ridiculous about this, that I don't know which ____es me off the most. Can you reallt destroy a rotor with 1 day of light braking? Is there any reason the dealership should be out of these pads? And shouldn't they cut me some kind of break, seeing as how they've treated me like sh*t? Anyway, It's Sierra Scion in Lancaster, CA that's been ____ing on my shoes like this. Maybe I'll start driving the 50 miles to the 2nd nearest dealership to take care of business. Can somebody please tell me I'm not over-reacting?
If the rotor is grooved to a specified depth, then it needs to be replaced. Usually they can resurface them but if it is gouged, it needs to be replaced. Try another dealer... that price is way high... and they dont even have the parts...

Sucks that this dealership is trying to rip you off, but my friend can get you new rotors & high performance brake pads for less then what they qouted you at. If you need to pull your e-brake really high then you need an adjustment for your rear drums, if not then i dont think you need 1 @ only 14k miles. PM if you're interested in the rotors & pads.
A lot of people seem to agree that the price is way too high, but is anybody wierded out by the fact that I only got 14,000 miles out of them? I mean, I don't know a ton about cars, but that seems way too low to me. How far did you guys make it before you needed your first change?

If your rotors are bad, you can buy a new set of slotted rotors for like $150 and performance pads for like $65. The isntall isn't bad (just check the tech section for instructions). If it were my car, I would bring it home, order the parts online with express shipping, and just catch rides until the parts came in and I had time to install the stuff. Tell the dealer to go fu.. well, just tell them "No thank you." 14,000 miles is kind of early for a brake job, but it all depends on if you have heavy wheels and how hard you ride the brake.
The parts cost for this is around $100 or so. Add $20 for turning the rotors. It should take an experienced mechanic about an hour to do the job carefully. The rear brakes are self-adjusting so that part of their quote is just blowing smoke!
Even at dealer rates that adds up to about half of what you have been quoted.
This is a job that anyone can do themselves easily. Learn how to do your own wrenching and you'll avoid a lot of ripoffs.

My other car has a special compound brake pads. They are horrible for brake dust.. and they wear fast. The upside is that they grab like crazy and will stop you quick. A hard compound will last longer, not stop as well and eat your rotors...
I would think a car like the scion would have a normal brake pad compound and wear at a normal rate... I would guess its you who wore them down before their time.
I would call Scion and complain, first about the low miles and second the fact that only one rotor was bad (sticking caliper?) I work for a Dodge dealer (don't all boo at once), we would likely warranty the pads, two rotors, and at least one caliper. Don't take one dealers opinion, sorry to say but there are alot of ripoff artists out there. They won't offer you free stuff until you _____ like crazy. Sometimes bringing in your folks may help too, like it or not most dealers see you as a dumb young kid they can get over on. Good luck.
