Greetings from Japan! 2001 Toyota Bb What should I look for?
Greetings everyone!
I'm in the market for a vehicle and the Toyota Bb (xB) has caught my eye. Most of the vehicles I've looked at have around 70-90K miles, and while that seemed like a lot of miles years ago, by today's standards cars are just about broken in.
So I know the first xB's hit the US in 2004, so this would really be a first generation vehicle!
Are there certain things I should be looking for specifically? When I test drive it, should there be something I purposely look for that is specific to an xB? Aside from them being mostly automatic transmissions, they all seem to be the same here with the execption of trim packages, both exterior and interior. (think stuff like floorboards rot out, wheel bearing go at 50K miles, etc)
Any advice would greatly be appreciated!
Dana

handle on the rear door being loose or not working
heat and a/c dials moving easily enough (smoothly and make sure that they don't push back in to the dash)
belts on motor-make sure they are not glazed or have cracks
check engine oil especially well-smell to see if it smells smoky and compare the thickness and color to what a new oil looks like (an there should be no metal shavings)
brake pads-they should have been replaced at least once by now-check rotors for any grooves dug by worn pads
if possible have someone pull the spark plaugs (just one of your choosing should do) and make sure they are not fried looking (discolored, either reddish or black) they might have to replaced
air filter (just check to see if it's clean)
make sure all lights work
listen for exhaust leaks
This is all pretty much standard stuff when buying a used car (except the rear door handle)
