Help a Noob Make a Decision?
Hi guys,
I am pretty new to the forums, and I came here mainly for Tc info.
I am looking to buy a new car soon, and I never really considered an xA (I figured for the price I could get a Corolla or something).
Anyone can give me some reasons why they chose to buy an xA? Say over a Civic or Corolla? Of course I still might consider a Tc but it is like $3k more
Thanks in advance

welcome to the boards...
i have an xB, but i'll try to lend a hand... xA the smallest of the three, corolla has a bigger engine... other than that, they all pretty close in most areas: room, reliability, quality, milage, base price, ec... the advantage is the standard stuff you get with the xA... power everything, cd/mp3, abs, etc... plus you get a much more unique looking ride...
test drive one too!...
hope this helps... and good luck...

The Corolla is very ordinary.... If that's what you want, go for it.
The xA comes very well equipped for the $$ and is a kick in the butt to drive. I have 12,000 mi. on mine in the past 6 months. It's a cat fight to see who gets to drive it in my house...

xA all the way. I never had so much fun driving a car, I always come up with some excuse just to get out of my house and drive around. Oklahoma's gas is one of the cheapest anyways
i was in your position... minus the tc. i had the corolla and matrix on my list along with the xa. the corolla and matrix had a more solid feel to the car. the xa was just more fun to drive than the others and it was different. i was getting tired of seeing the same cars over and over, i'm glad i got the xa, the only thing i wish is that it had one more gear.. it has enough power for daily driving to get around, could do with some more though for sure. but the gearing is my only problem with it. that and the seats because i'm taller, 6'2. it was uncomfortable at first, i think my seats are broken in now though so it feels fine, that and i got about 4 thick washers under the front bolts to give it a little bucket seat slope and thigh support.
the xa is nice, and the only corolla worth getting is the S model, the corrollas looks bad without the lips and the matrix as well looks bad without the lips. xa looks really good once you get the windows tinted and lower it.

Thanks for all your replies.. keep em coming!
In terms of price I could probably get an 04 Corolla for same price as 05 xA.. but everyone tells me Corolla is a girl car, and reading some reviews about the seating position, that may be somewhat true!
What a shame they didnt use a Corolla engine in xA
"First Scion xA in Oklahoma."
^^^
That is pretty funny

i was also considering a Corolla before i got my xA. I got the xA instead for a couple of reason....
I liked the styling better....i like that it's different....i see maybe one xA on my way to work....as opposed to 100's of Corollas....
The power to weight ratio isn't that much different.....so Corolla loses some of it's advantage having a larger engine.
More versatile cargo space with the hatch....i'm amazed at the amount of stuff i'm able to carry in my little car.
The biggest factor for me was all of the standard features. I could have gotten a Corolla for the same price.....but it wouldn't have had power windows....power door locks....ABS.... etc.....and to get it down to the xA price i would have had to haggle.....
I've had mine for 4 months now and i love it....i look forward to driving it....
instead of the Corolla where when i went to test drive it i thought...."ugghhh....well at least it's affordable"

My peeps bought a Corolla and I feel cramped in the front seats. the glass feels so close to my face. I drive an xB, so I've got tons of space there, but the xAs are roomier than the rolla, IMO.
Plus, there's the whole Scion community thing.

I had a '02 corolla before my Scion and I can tell you that the xA gives you a better enjoyment on driving it. Beside, there way too much corollas around and not enough xA. I still love the corolla and all, but the xA is very affordable for the price and the standard corolla doesnt come with power window and doors (CE model). If I'm not mistaken, Corolla Ce starts at 14K?
To comparably equip a Corolla to match the xA for features, you would have to kick in another 2-3K... and you said money was a concern. As everyone else said, why buy the car thats as common as dirt? Im proud to own an xA, and im proud of how unique it is... people at stoplights lean out their windows to ask me questions about it- I can guarantee nobody will be doing that about a boring Corolla.
Yup... price is a major factor. Try finding a Corolla with ABS for less than $14K. It ain't gonna happen. Dollar for dollar, I don't think there is another car that gives you what the xA does.
Where else can you get Toyota quality at Hyundai prices besides an Echo? Scion has to be hurting Echo sales big time. Corolla is a safe bet of a car for quality and reliability, but I'm guessing you have to add on to that to equal what the Scion includes as standard.
Scion also got a 4-star rating (out of 5) in every category for crash tests from NHTSA, just as the Corolla did. It would be nice if some were 5's like the Aveo. Icing on the cake is getting power everything (except remote entry) with ABS, and then to be able to get side air curtains for only $650 extra is fantastic. Side air curtains are considered the most effective way of protecting the head in a side crash.

I had a very similar predicament, like many of the people here. My choices were(for my first car, I may add) the Honda Civic LX, Toyota Matrix, and Scion xA. Originally I wanted the Civic for the low insurance, but let me tell you what made me choose my xA...
Firstly, after just seeing the Matrix, I ruled it out. The car looks too "soccer mom-ish" to me, if you get what I mean. It's a fine car, but just not my style. Matrix gone.
I drove both the Civic and xA that same day. The Civic was a little cramped for me, and the accelerator is a bit touchy. It also cost a lot more base than a Scion, but it drove well. It is a good car. Also, it came with a security lockout function on the radio, where each time the battery is turned off, dies, or is replaced, will be useless until a five-digit code is entered to unlock it. A code that is different for each radio and should only be known by the owner(s) of the vehicle.
When I drove the Scion, it handled better for me and I preferred the "get-up-n'-go" of it. It was a little milder on acceleration than the Civic was. So that's two points for the shuttle. The seats in the Scion were of much higher quality than those of the Honda. The price was also excellent. I could get a few extras and it was still cheaper than the Civic. Well, at about this point, I was leaning heavily towards the xA. After seeing the interior space, it hit me that getting to college would be so much easier with a vehicle like the xA. The fold-down seats would make room for my clothes, instrument stuff(I'm a music major),and whatever else I needed to take.
Those were my reasons for choosing a Scion over the competition. Sorry if this was so long, I'm new to the forum(My shuttle should be coming in in a couple days! I'll be the only Scion at my high school.
). Happy driving all.
