On all my Mustangs I changed at 3k...and they usually needed it fairly badly. Against my better judgement, I went with the factory recommendation of 5k with the xB. Last time I changed the oil the drained oil still looked fairly decent. I think I could have gone another 2k without a change.
FYI...I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic. From my past experiences I've noticed this stuff usually stays cleaner for longer compared to regular oil.

if you are changing mobil 1 at 3k then you wasting your jack,10k to 15 k,you better talk to your stupid dealer tho to see what he or she says, they want you in every 3k which is bs,i change every 5k,instead of 7500.coming up on the last free oil change, and at 5k the oil is clean, dont waste your mon on 3k oil changes as todays oil,is much better than 10 years ago even. i use a mineral based oil. my oil at 5k is a very light straw color,as time goes on, i will change at 3k,a long time down the road tho,at 50k or longer.

I use synthetic, and change every 5K-6K. There is no reason to change it any more often. My 69 spitfire sait to change the oil every 12.5K and the filter every other oil change... don't fall for the hype that you need to change your oil every 3K. change it as often as needed to not void your warrenty (and that's still too often in my opinion).

Not always the case with synthetic though. Both of my older Mustang's would dirty up the synthetic oil within 3k miles. I'd even be throwing a quart of oil in the 306 every 1k miles due to the looser piston rings...that was tons of fun.
