I say get the 1st gen because it's a classic. They are great vehicles. Yes you can tow, not like a truck can or anything, but a small boat, motorcycle, light objects, yes the xB can tow.

The xB2 can tow a little more but not by much. Get the xB2 if you want more cargo room and a larger engines.

I was looking at a 2nd gen xb the other day at a dealer-it was lowered, nice wheels, blacked out front and yakima tracks-maybe some other stuff. Up close I liked it a lot-except it was an auto....

There are days when I would trade some gas mileage for a little more power and it seems with the SC or turbo the 2nd gen reacts better than 1st does...

I love the looks and size of my 1st gen....YYYYAAAHHHHHH (my mind hurts)

Nope, 06 has the same power as an 04 or 05. Decrease in rated HP is change in the test or Toyota's acceptance of a standard test. I think that included requiring the rated power to be using the recommended fuel grade. So you can't put in 92 octane and rate 105 HP for specs, then recommend 87 in the owner's manual and get 103. Maybe not the same reason as why the xB dropped, but I think it was part of the same testing standardization.

i would say good choice of getting the new one. Having both xB1 and xB2 there are ups and downs to both gens. I love my OG xB and I always have more fun with it due to its cat like handling. Also I do drive about 120 miles every weekend. Side by side, they are totally different cars, if you want power and cargo, obviously the new xB2. If you want better MPG but a fun easy car to drive, the xB1. I tend to get tired faster driving the xB2 in longer trips compared to the xB1, probably due to the weight. Also the xB2 feels more confined but has more room which doesnt make sense to me, but I feel that way. The xB2 is a good choice because at the end, you Futureproofed yourself, or at least for the next few years. While my xB1 is gaining high miles and starting to break down little by little, the xB2 will be in warranty.

It's kinda funny how what looked good on paper 2-3 years ago when gas was cheap doesn't look so hot now. xB FTW
Everyone kept saying what a deal the xB2 was and didn't worry about the mpgs that much.

So I have been reading the gen 2 side and they are getting over 30 frequently as well and my GF doesn't like the way that my 1st gen xb rides (doesn't bother me but I understand-it does ride rough for a weekend trip car) and then that comment about the warranty and small things going (I have 32, 900 miles right now) and I see that TRD is making a charger for the 2nd gen and there are 2 release series (5 I think-the gold one) on sale here for $1000 off...

.....man, I love mine and if I had the $$$ I would just buy a 2nd gen and keep both but that isn't an option right now and my warranty is close to being done which would drop trade in value quite a ways...

What to do.....AAAAAYYYYYYY....my head hurts....

I drove a 2nd gen today-here is what I have to say..

1st gen-so cool it hurts, I still think there is no car as cool or unique and never will be, the mileage is great (yaris does better) and it holds a buttload of stuff, handles wonderfully and feels like a true autocross car (light, fast, quick on it's feet-well, mine does because of the mods), seating position is perfect

2nd gen-warranty, it does feel faster (not as quick but you look down and you're moving pretty good), quieter, smoother (weight and cushiony tires), still feels pretty sharp and quick at regular around town manuevers, all the aftermarket work on the tC motor and transmission is basically transferable (little mods and wiring and positioning of external motor mods will have to be developed though), front seats seem to be more comfortable, arm rest between seats, I rarely see modded ones, handles better than I expected with stock springs, tires and steel wheels

If something happened to my 1st gen and I got a check to go buy another car I would definitely get a 2nd gen-wouldn't even look at a 1st gen or an xD (there is not any performance development going on yet)

Trading in my 1st gen xB? I would hate to see someone else driving MY car. I would hate to have the warranty be up and end up with some $$$problem. I would like to have less rattles and a smoother ride on rough roads. I would like to be able to step on it at 55 in a situation and have it accelerate me out of trouble (mine doesn't seem to without planning it), I would hate to look back in a few years when there aren't so many 1st gens driving around in good shape and think "I used to have one..."

my dad has an 05' and bought an 08' about 6 months ago. he was gonna drive the XB2 and have my mom drive the best.... I mean the 05'. after a few days, he was back to driving the 05', and has my mom drive the XB2. He enjoys driving it much more than the new one.

Had a seriously quick and twisty drive home last night-forget why I have the 1st gen sometimes and then this happens-no 2nd gen for me after all (at least not as a replacement)

The only replacement for my xB would be the new upcoming 5 dr. Yaris. Everything else pales in comparison

Gen 1 for the win!

And Jeff, Yaris is nice! And maybe the Cube! Otherwise my PW is going to die a long slow death!

The XB2 is lame. It feels like driving a boat.

And the slightly lower mileage makes a huge difference:

xb1, 10 gallons at 35 mpg is 350 miles.

xb2, even at 27 mpg for instance, you lose 80 miles and approximately $8 to $9
per tankful!

You could spend that money elsewhere, and it adds up.

I vote 1st gen XB due to reasons of better gas, way it handles, insurance, and don't forget looks. The 2nd gen has been placed in the same category as a PT cruiser so that alone, makes me not like the 2nd gen. hehe...I find the new one repulsive and that back light on the back has to go. Basically if I won a 2nd gen, I'd sell it...
