Default i like/want the xB but my wife HATES it

like the topic says, i like the xB and want to trade my 03 Civic Si in for one. only problem (besides my credit!) is my wife loathes the xB. she says its the ugliest vehicle on the road period. calls it a cheaply made astrovan wanna-be wagon and questions its reliability. heh she also hates my current car and also calls it an ugly wagon, even though its a hatchback. anyways im doing everything i can to convince her an xB is a good choice for us. we have a 4 month old and our two door cars arent cutting it. plus im upside down on the loan with my Si and, for a honda.. its pretty crappy as far as quality goes. her priorities seem to be style, reliability, style, style again, and lastly performance. mine, since the addition of our baby and our lack of money, are price, reliability, gas mileage, room, and then style. performance would be nice but im trying to get away from all of that since its too costly to build a motor and pay for tickets heh. performance is my passion, but i guess i need to grow up a little. id love to be able to sale my car and get rid of a car payment and high insurance and get an old accord 4dr for cash and do an h22 swap, but then as i said, im upside down with the Si.. i wouldnt be able to sale it and pay the difference on what i owe.

so any thoughts on what i should do overall or how to talk the wife into considering the xB?

thanks
- Chris

Sorry man... you are going to have to divorce her. It will be rough... but the xB will fill the void she left.

heh she likes cars we cant afford as in 04+ maxima, 03+ accord, and the mazda6 V6s, and of course things like BMW and lexus.. in all honestly it will be difficult to get financed for the xB. we probably will end up having to go cheaper than that ;\

The first time I saw the xB was at the NAIAS '03. I knew I wanted the car as soon as I saw it. My wife thought it was the fugliest car she ever saw AND that I just liked the models talking about the car.

What I did was show her everything xB came with standard, and she liked that but still didn't like the car. This past Dec. we test drove the xB and she fell in love with the car. This year at the NAIAS I couldn't get her out of the display xB. LOL We are getting our xB in July as soon as we the hell out of Michigan and move back to Texas. I think the key is to get her in one and drive it.

It can be done. Good Luck!

prolly not a good idea....with the list of cars she likes...

loud, flashy, sporty cars are not her taste...sedate looking sedans are her flavor(also the prestige of the big names)

ive thought about using the test drive as a way to win her over, but she wont even get in it to test drive. i played a joke on her a couple of days ago and told her i talked with scion and they told me i was preapproved and could come pick up my scion that day.. she nearly cried. she was whining 'but i dont want that car!!! cant they give us a TC instead?" which would make the trade pointless since the main reason is because we need a 4 door.

if i can get financed i might would just get it behind her back and let it grow on her ;)

My wife hated the xB when she first saw it.

After seeing my Cousins xB lowered with custom wheels, and riding in it, she started to change her mind. It ended up taking about 2 months before she really liked it and wanted one. Now she gets mad if she can't drive it. She loves it and wants to get another one.

She wants a Mazda or a BMW, and she's concerned about the reliability of a Toyota? I mean, I know that women are exempt from the bounds of logic, but give me a break.

I don't particularly care for the xBs, but I applaud your desire to get a car that meets your family's needs, both in terms of space and convenience, as well as financially. You're trying to get your finances more in order, while she apparently wants to sink you deeper into a hole.

How about an xA? Corolla?

when i got mine my girlfriend at the time hated it so much not only because of the shape but the color. i bought it anyway and she eventually warmed up to it. if you havent taken her to a show room to see it yet, do so. have her sit in it and show her all the space in the back for the little ones. a baby seat fits well in the back seat. as far as it being a cheaply made wagon, remind her its a toyota.

Get her to sit inside of one, a lot of people warm up to it once they are inside. Around Annapolis area, most of the people that are buying xBs are doing so because it's a great value...they tolerate the way it looks so that they can have 35mpg and toyota reliabilty for 15k. It's also surprisingly fun to drive...so the key is going to be getting her to the dealer to see how much fun the car really is

Well, my wife doesn't like my xB, but then again she doesn't have to drive it either. I'd say if she doesn't like your current ride, what are you going to be out by getting another one she doesn't like. And as far as reliability goes, Toyota is one of the best out there. Just my 2 cents.

I just had to respond to this one. Being a "soon-to-be" wife with a 17mo. old daughter and 2 stepkids (7yo & 4yo), it would make a GREAT family car!!!! Look at us, we NEVER thought of getting something like the Scion. Who could beat a funky and unique style, good $$$, good gas mileage, lots of space and headroom and big, tinted windows??? Your wife doesn't know what she's missing out on, maybe she should go and test one out before talking that trash. We got it because we despise MiniVans and it's NO WHERE near the minivan. Why pay $45K + for a car??? That's ridiculous, it's a car that will get you from point A to point B and the safety of your family is important no matter what the price. Toyota has a very good reputation and since I got my Scion (July 3, 2004), I have seen an increase in Scion owners. It's not just a fad, it's a fact.

I've been there, done that with the 2 door car and a 4 month old baby, I traded in my '96 Mitsubishi Spyder GST Convertible for the Scion and it is the best purchase we ever made. If you are low on $$$, at least you will be able to afford a Scion, we pay $40 dollars less a month on car payments (compared to my convertible) AND we traded in my car with no money down. Plus, we got the spoiler, fog lights and 6 disc CD changer added on...all for about $21,000!! Good Deal

Good luck with your wife! I hope she changes her mind soon so you can have a reliable and affordable car for your family!!! And, who's car is this anyways??? What does she drive?

Keep us updated, this oughta be interesting!

My wife isn't too fond of the xB either, but I think we both realize that we can't afford much more than an xB right now.

I think it'll do about 85% of what we want it to do. I guess that means no more back woods camping or off-roading for me.
