MPG FACTS - ONLY
I know a topic like this has been covered before but, maybe this one can the most conclusive.
Please list only the true ways of increasing mpg. Things that can be replicated and continually be seen to work over and over.
I personally get 33 mpg. Really just curious to see what you guys come up with.
Thanks

Shift between 2500 and 3000 rpm (on fairly level roads) and skip 4th gear (go straight from 3rd to 5th).
Keep your tires inflated properly.
(Caveat: People will suggest overinflating the tires, sometimes by quite a margin, but don't forget that the tires are considered part of the suspension system by the mnaufacturer. Not only will you be looking at a harsher ride, but it will contribute to an earlier demise of the other suspension components.)

The only real fact is that every car is different and there are to many factors to come to a conclusion. MPGs will not be the same from car to car. Climate, altitude, humidity, and temp are all factors that contribute to mpg. Add in heavy wheels and extra weight and your on a collision course to a new "my mileage is terrible" thread. Just for giggles, if I get close to or over 300 to a tank im thankful.

2. Use premium fuel.
3. Use light throttle at all times.
4. Shift at 2000 rpm.
5. Do not exceed 60 mph.
Over and over the car gets 35 mpg in daily driving. On a 2-lane road trip it got 37 mpg and on an Interstate trip it got 43 mpg. 2006 xB manual.
Let me give a little more info on my stated 27mpg. Im running a K&N CAI and a Precision Muffler axle back. 18" rims, and Im in the San Fernando Valley which is damn hot right now. So the air is always on. Im also night very light on the peddle. When I get on the freeway, I GET ONNN THE FREEWAY. Seeing Redline once or twice a week is normal and the milage never changes. Now on occasion we have taken the box on trips and I do see better milage on the highway. Maybe 30-31 mpg.
05 auto
31.5 mpg city never less than 30
best hwy so far is 35.5 on a 380 round trip avg. average hwy mpg is about 33 -34
I don't baby the xB but I dont abuse it... I have never got less than 30mpg no matter how hard it is driven

TheRealBoster was looking for true ways of increasing mpg that can be replicated over and over. Scientific fact vs personal experience and conjecture, I think.
According to edmunds.com, based on a study recently completed using a variety of vehicles, tested on a consistent course under identical condtions:
1. 37% improvement in gas milage: Avoiding sudden starts and stops (using slow acceleration and coasting to stops).
2. 14 % improvement in gas milage: Driving 65 vs 75 mph.
3. 14% improvement in gas milage: Using cruise control for a super steady throttle and slow acceleration up hills.
4. 19% improvement in gas milage: Avoiding excessive idling (in this case, a 10 mile trip with 10 two minute stops vs a 10 mile trip with 10 two minute engine-off stops).
5. NO IMPROVEMENT: AC on vs AC off on the highway at 65 mph.
6. NO IMPROVEMENT: Changing tire pressure from recommended level to 5 - 8 lbs below recommended level.
The US Dept of Energy estimates that each 5 mph a person drives over 60 mph is like paying an additonal 15 center per gallon due to the loss in efficency. And, they weren't talking about our aerodynamic nightmare of a box.
Vintage42 and Archngl are: DRIVE LIKE GRANDMA. In the end, it's easiest way to consistently improve your milage, no matter what mods you've done.
BTW, my milage went down when I added my ingen CAI. My milage did not change when I added 17" chrome rims with Falkens or increased the gap in my Denso Irridium plugs to .044.

43mpg is downhill or virtually idling. no regular driving will produce that.
i get between 25 and 30 regularly. best i ever seem to get is about 32.
best i've EVER got was about 34 on a trip from la to sac staying under 75 the entire way (very hard for me)
I do know that I get 25 mpg going 100

36 has been my best, got it 3 different times.
once last year on way to beach , twice in past 2 months on trips to Cedar Point and once mixed highway/city.
k&n air filter has been great, and trying to keep my fiance from reving up the engine!
good luck
i'm a gas hog , and i hate thinking of what prices will be this winter

Better than a Ferrari F50, Lamborghini Countach, Dodge Viper, and a Volkswagen (New) Beetle. Serious.
06' manual trans.
I am getting 32-33 MPG. About 90% on the highway @80 MPH. The rest around town.
I got 36 MPG when I took it up in the mountains a couple of weekends ago! Go figure, I thought it would be worse mileage driving up and down hill and around curves. Maybe I went downhill more the uphill
