I added a K&N Air Filter. I live 3 miles from the freeway so most of my driving is 65 - 70 MPH. I have averaged 32 - 35 MPG with the AC on all of the time. Since they started adding 10% Ethanol I have noticed my MPG has dropped a little. I am happy to get 300 miles to a tank of gas. I used to go 300 miles on my Tacoma but I only got 18 MPG if I was lucky. I love my Xb and the gas mileage!

Just filled my tank with premium and haven't had to use the AC this week. The odometer is at 228 and the tank is still half full. I do notice that my box runs smoother too!

Here is an update on my gas experience- I drove from Fountain Hills, AZ and on a FULL tank of gas averaging around 70mph on the I10-W I filled up at the Morongo Casion. I had gone 303 miles and was just between the last 2 bars before the reserve light went on. So I filled up but could have gone longer. I filled up a total of 4.576 gallons. SOOO 11-4.576=6.424 gallons used to go from Arizona to the desert in Cali. Then by dividing the total miles of 303 on the 6.424 gallons used- I averaged 47.16687422 MPG!!!!! HAHAH so guys, go 70 in a 75 zone and you can get the mileage I got.

Or not. Simply not going to happen. You underfilled.

No I couldnt afford to fill it up all the way. So off of the 303 miles I had gone, off the gas used, that is the average amount of distance I got. I did not say 47.1 mpg on the TANK, but on the set amount CONSUMED

So far every tank I've filled up has equaled approx 31 mpg, I had the car 2 weeks and have approx 1300 miles so far..

Sorry, Your math is incorrect. If you started out on full tank and your tank was nearly empty, you had to have used almost 11.9 gallons (the capacity of the tank). Assuming the reserve is about 1.9 gallons, you used about 10 gallons for a little over 30 mpg.

Starting with a full tank, you drove 303 miles.
Then you "filled up" with 4.576 gallons of gas.
You subtracted that from 11 to determine you left 6.424 gallons of air in the tank.
That air represented the gas used.
Then you divided the miles by the air to get the mpg.

But the tank actually holds 11.9 gallons.
That means you left 7.324 gallons of air in the tank.
Dividing that into the 303 miles gives 41.37 mpg.

41.37 mpg is certainly possible for an automatic cruising 303 miles at 70.
My manual got 42.8 mpg cruising 250 miles at 60.

Default First week's mpg

Just filled my tank for the first time. 31.3mpg. Must be doing something right. Based on tripmeter miles, so subject that accuracy.

so since I am an advocate of the search function on this site, and this thread is all about MPG, Ill post my question here:

How much gas does the xB consume while idling? I ask because Im always amazed at how low my MPG is: roughly 24-25MPG. But then I think back in the week and remember that I idled for 10min here, 15 min there and sat in the car watching a movie on the 2-Din. Pretty much anywhere I go, either myself or the gF stays in the car watching **** on the screen while the other goes into the store to buy something, etc...

The little 1.5L engine uses very little gas when idling. But prolonged or frequent idling will add up. In addition to the idling, you are probably using a good bit of throttle and rpms when driving, not making an effort to save gas. And it does take an effort.

My ScanGauge II usually says .1 gallons per hour, sometimes .2. I suppose if you want to get super-nerdy you could add up your idle time and multiply by something from .1 - .2 gph and then subtract that amount before doing your fuel efficiency calculations.

I've been averaging 28 MPG in city driving. Filled up with premium last night to see if it makes any difference.

I switched back and forth on a 2500-mile trip, and others have, too. No difference that can be attributed only to the gas. According to Scion, the engine is setup to work as well as possible on 87 octane and higher octane is of no benefit to either power or economy:

… The vehicle is engineered and tested using 87 octane fuel. We recommend that fuel for optimum performance, reliability, and fuel economy on the vehicle. The vehicle does make the same power at maximum throttle position on 87 octane as it would on higher octane fuel.

Mileage dropped from 32mpg to 27! My new job keeps me on the highway for 105 miles a day. I figured driving more highway would increase my mileage, but it hurt it bad. The 1.5 doesn't seem nearly as efficent at 4000rpm (75-80mph)then driving around town at 3-3500k.

Mine is an '06 5spd, with sythetic oil, and a YRD short intake/K&N filter. Steel wheels.

I'm wondering if lighter Al. wheels would help a little... at least with acceleration (less peddle needed to get onto I295)

The engine is just as efficient at high rpm, but it takes more power and fuel to go fast. The wind resistance increases with the square of the speed. It takes almost twice the power to go 80 mph as 60 mph. I have gotten 42 mpg on two tanks when driving at a steady 60. I have not done a tank at 80 mph, but I expect the mileage would drop to the high 20s. (Like you, I have an '06 manual, steel wheels, synthetic oil in engine and trans.)
