Must it be Musty?
Yeah, my xB is only 2 months old, and already musty. VERY musty. I get in it, smells like i've had piles of wet clothes in my box for weeks! I dont used the AC that often but i still use it.... my friend told me to check for leaks.... none that i see.... then he told me to "spray" the AC unit, hoping to kill off any mold. I dont know what really to do, anyone else have this problem?
It's not an A/C issue. It's just the environment around the box.
By law the following steps should still be within reason of the proper/ intended use of Lysol. You will kill molds and not harm people. I am not responsible if someone is injured or dies via this exercise.
Make sure no one is in the car. Open all your windows. Step outside. Take a bottle Lysol Antibacterial/Mold spray. Examine the vents under the windshield (the outside). Spray Lysol directly into these vents. Spray for maybe 30 seconds or 2-3 30 second burst. Wait about a minute or two. Now, making sure no one is inside the car and the windows are rolled down, turn on the car. Make sure the "Outside" air lever is in outside air mode. Turn on the A/C system to full blast and get out of the car. Let it go for about 2-3 minutes. Turn the A/C off and car. Let the Lysol smell desipate. Although you'll still smell Lysol for awhile. Don't breath it in.

Have you also read the following Air-Filter information:
https://www.scionlife.com/tech/interior_filter.php Make sure you buy the correct filter as shown in the pic. It is the 3M Ultra Allergen 1250 20x25x1. It has a purple Ad-sheet as shown. THere is smaller versions of this but they are the same price. Weird. :?
Here is the original thread: https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...light=filtrete
You can always buy the Echo Air Filter from Toyota. Prices varies from $15-20
And from what I've heard it doesnt block as much.
I checked my filter 2 months ago. It works. It blocked leaves, and small particles. Now that was 2 months ago, before the high pollen count, mold spores, etc. I havent checked mine yet, but it's probably dirty, especially with the dead cicadas that my windshield has killed so far.

Another problem is you get a build up of mold in the A/C system from using it in closed-air mode to often.
The easy answer for this is a trip to wal*mart. Go into the automotive department and find an air freshener called "Ozium" (sp?) Anyway, it's in a metal spray can.
Go out to the car, put it in closed (recirculate) mode. Spray the ozium under the passanger side of the dash (you should see an inlet there), 2-3 sprays should be enough. (I do 1-2 on the driver side as well)
Now, start the car, roll up the windows and turn the A/C on full blast. Do not sit in the car, stand next to it, this only takes about one or two minutes.
After a few minutes, shut the car off, roll the windows down and let it air out.
You've now killed every living thing inside your A/C system.
I've kept a can of this stuff in my glovebox for a few years now, works wonders. :D

ok- all cars with a/c will stink when you run the a/c and then turn it off and run fresh air. My grandma's brand new lexus stinks from time to time. My advice to you is to turn off the a/c 2-3 mins from you destination. This will allow the water buildup within the ducts to dry out with the warmer air.
You may want to remove the cowling between hood and windshield and make sure crap hasn't fallen down into the air intake for the ventilation system. It's a scary straight shot down from there into the vent unit. If you park where crap falls on your car alot, some may have gotten down in there and is moldy. I'd check it and then make a filter for it if you don't want to pay 20 bucks for one. I bought an HVAC filter and some charcoal inserts in the Air Cleaner area at Walmart. There's enough of the filter to make about 6 filters and then I top it with the charcoal sheets. Even driving past the cows in Tracy, I didn't smell them and it's usually a gagger...
I've noticed that the Box is pretty airtight. When the fan is off and I turn the dash vents down, there is hardly any airflow into the car. It may be trapping the smells. Whenever i pick up fast food, it reeks in the Box later, especially the kids' McD's. Since I park in the garage, I usually roll all the windows down and that keeps it fresh...
BTw, Ozium works good to kill ODORS, but doesn't kill molds. Use the Lysol if you find mold.
