Default My Windsheild...

I was just wondering if anyone has had any problems with the xB Windshield. I was driving on the freeway and all of a sudden heard a noise and looked up. My windsheild was cracked. So I figured I was hit with a rock and I would just get it fixed by my insurance company. But when I got to where I was going, I got out of the car and looked at how bad the crack and the chip was going to be. But there was no rock chip or anything else to show that my car was hit. I just dont understand. Does anyone know of this happening? I have a 5 month old Green xB. Let me know!

Do a search and read the lament of many an xB owner on broken, cracked, and pitted windshields. There was a similar post to yours a couple of days ago. One of the contributors mentioned that when he took a real close look he found the area where the rock had hit. Some folks are on their third or fourth windshields...........

take it to the dealer and tell them it was a stress crack. if there is no chip you may be able to get it replaced

If there is a "star" then it is not a stress crack.

if it "spider-webbed" then that was an impact...but a crack from the sides or top you can probably pull off as a stress crack and get your dealer to fix

Yes it was so wierd...I keep getting out of my car where ever I stop and check it again and again, there is no spider web or anything like that...it comes down the top of my windshield, where the seal is and comes down about 6 to 8 inches then vears right kind of around the rearview morror and then goes across the center. It was so wierd...I have had a rock hit and crack my window before, and it didnt sound anything like it. Im going tomorrow morning and talk to The Orange Team at Scion of El Monte. Thanks for the replys, if there is anything else please give me as much information as you can!!

DFWDJ=== i worked for a mercedez dealer and peple would try to pull off a damaged windshield by a rock, by stating it being a stress fracture, so i know the difference but in my case there is absolutely no damage by rocks, I am so picky and if it was a rock and damaged present id be like f*ck it time to save for a new windshield but thats not the case.

I know...my dad is a a car mechanic and well, lets just say, I grew up under the hood of a car. I know the difference between a rock and a stress frecture too and I would fully take "blame" and say that it was a rock and never have posted this....if it does come down to me having to buy a new windshield, I think Ill just talk to my insurance and have them deal with it. But thanks for adding that because I know who cazy people get when it comes to their cars...when they came to my dad for service, they blamed everything but themselves...when in actuallity, it was all there fault...lol...

Well I guess I better Knock on Wood. I am lucky enough to be on windshield #1. I have been very surprised with some of the hits I've taken on the highway the past 6 months.

I have taken some real pops--but when I finally get a chance to look I see that some of them went off my bumper. Try as I might, I can not avoid the many gravel trucks running up and down the 605 in Los Angeles.

Default windshield crack

yeah, see here's the thing...it doesn't matter that the windshield is practically vertical, so were the vw beetles of yesteryear. the big difference is size of the target and thickness of the glass. the vw beetle had a much smaller target area for debris hitting it and perhaps is much thicker glass. i have replaced all the glass on a 72 beetle and can tell you that the front windshield was pretty hefty.

that being said, i still haven't replaced my xB windshield even though it's been cracked for 2 months. it cracked while no one was in the car. the front windows were partly down and the front of the car parked in the shade while the rest was in the morning sun. could temperature differnces affect this? also, the light frame could be to blame. i suspect the twisting of the frame was the culprit and the temp worsened the situation.

hey, this is my first post here so i hope this doesn't come out typed in bold or anything excessive.

Hmm, so the dealers would replace a windshield if it were a stress fracture? Mine cracke a month into ownership while sitting in the garage over-night??? Go figure. I know there wasn't a crack in the windshield before I went to bed because I just handwashed and dryed it in the driveway before I parked it in the garage for safe storage and there was no crack in it. Guess the garage wasn't safe enough

Yeh, Dealerships *should* replace stress-cracked windshields for free. The parent company knows it's an issue with many cars, and pays the dealership to do the job...

Dealer techs know how to tell the difference between stress and rock cracks...

Don't be shy about legit warranty claims- you already paid for it when you bought the car, it's a kind of insurance policy...
