Default OK guys and gals---I was lied too

I know, its hard to believe a car dealer salesperson would lie about something----but I was already aware of the little filter for the inside air (behind the glove compartment) from reading about it on this forum (prior to even ordering my xB). So when we picked up the new BOX, I asked the sales guy (actually he is the internet manager) about the filter-----he said don't worry, we have already installed one. OK fine!!!! So I have had the car for a couple of weeks now and reading this forum and over in the tech area saw an actual diagram of how to remove the glove box---and the suggestion about using home type filters, cut them up and make your own----so I decided to remove the glove box and check to see if they indeed had installed one----NOPE-----NONE in there. So I went to my trusty ACE Hardware and purchased the largest and best filter (3 month made by 3M) and made my own----matter of fact was able to get 8 filters for the car out of one of these large filters. Installed the filter and I now have beat the system ($22 at dealer) thanks to this forum. And oh by the way---this filter cost me $17.88 plus tax at ACE------for 8 filters for the BOX. PJRACER

how did you beat the system? you let a car dealer lie to you, and to cover it for them, you spent $20 of your own money?

They said it was there, they should be responsible for installing it.

yeah if its not there its not there they should have just said that lol

my guess is maybe the guy either didnt know 100% what you were asking about, or possibly really assumed it SHOULD be there...which 99% of us if asked would likely assume there should be one in there

I asked the sales manager about the filers and what I got was -> <- a very nice impression of a "deer in the headlights" look. The assumption was that they were already there. From this website I knew differently and just let it go as "the usual" nonsense you get from automobile dealers and those that work there.

I contactd www.scion.com and used the live chat to ask about the filters. They said the filter does not come with the car. When we bought a second xb I complained to the dealer and he threw in filters for both cars. But Scion says the glove box filter does not come with the car!

In truth I don't think that many salesmen are even aware that there is a CABIN air filter. I think they think your talking about the engine filter. My salesman knew nothing until I showed him the page in the manual on where and how it goes. He was like wow I never knew!!

Hey, that's good. Do everyone a favor and post that in every thread that has ever complained about a dealership on this forum, would you? It would save LOTS of headaches!

Wait... handle it in a different way.. Go back and tell the dealer you are ready to buy another Scion for a family member... but since you were lied to, you will take your business to another dealer.... This will get them much more upset then having to make excuses as to why the filter wasn't there...

I also make the homemade filters using the ACE Hardware purchased 3M filtrette filters...I have been changing mine about every 3 months (as recommended on the filter packaging) and have been enjoying nice cabin air and avoiding most of the outside air (when not on recirc) as possible :D

Hope that helps :D

Hmm.. will hafta take a peak at this. Dust isn't a problem in Oregon (Mud, however...) but preventing some of the sneezing fits I have from pollen due to my mild hay fever would be nice.

Trust me, tire dust on the freeways in Oregon actually IS a problem - that's why my new filter turned black driving 'round Eugene/Springfield.

Really. It's amazing how much finely ground rubber, brake lining, and metal dust cars leave behind on the road, and how much even just a little traffic stirs it up.

Very true...I've been running the heater and the defroster a lot these days so seeing as I've had the settings to fresh air I changed the filter out a bit early this time...After just a month installed, my filter was as black as coal...I'm a believer in what the road throws at us in the air...
