Problems with Manual rear gear and grinding?
OK, before anyone says I need to use the clucth, I have been driving stick on my Mazda PU for over 100,000 miles, and its still the original factory clutch. I am THAT good.
OK, I just purchased a 2005 xB from Bell rd. Scion in Phx, last week. It was the only dealer it seemed in the greater Phoenix area that had any xBs in stock that were manual. OK, now the other day, I start my xB and with the clutch all the way down, I put it into reverse and it starts grinding on me! I'm like OH CRAP what did I do?
I try to think of what caused it and my xB may have already been rolling a bit backwards and the engine was revved from just having started up.
Making sure the vechicle is at a dead stop before I put it into reverse seems to work for now.
I guess it's a habit I have from driving my Mazda, the reverse gears will not engage at all if I have the clutch in all the way.
Anyone else having this problem? I may still go back to Bell Scion and have them check it out if it happens again.
They better fix it too, I paid for 100,000 mile Platinum Protection package!

I've had the same problem...although I dont think it is a problem...I have been driving a stick since age 8! I got 160K out of an Isuzu Amigo stock clutch...but I think it's just has something to do with the synchros in the tranny...I dont think it's a problem, just make sure ur stopped before going into reverse. I have a habit of puting the car in 1st, then going to reverse...align the gears n what not...but thats just habit...
You and me have to same problem!!! My car has sometimes, upon starting up and going right into reverse, it will grin with the clutch all the way in. Its nothing seriously like a grind you would recieve with trying to place it in gear with the clutch out. It just sounds like the grind you would get from reving then immediately putting it in reverse. Never heard it? Try it. This has lead me, a certified ASE technician ,to believe it is a reverse synchro problem! Keep your eyes peeled to see if scion releases a reverse gear synchro TSB report.
I have had this problem too. It will also do it if you put it into 1st gear when you are moving too fast. It really freaked me out the first time that I did it... now I just wait to put it into gear until I am nearly stoped and it seems to be fine. I have also driven quite a few manual transmissions and never noticed anything like this. hmmmm
Thanks everyone for the posts. I can sleep a little better knowing that I haven't gone completely insane. I was really worried
but I guess it's just something I will have to get used to. I still get the auto-window buttons in the wrong direction (my mazda was stripped down, no power anything except steering and brakes).
yeah mine does the same thing, i find i need to be fully stop, regaurdless if i;m coasting forward or backwards, it will grind into reverse.... sometimes i find if i just pushed in the clutch and put it into reverse, it will sometimes gride aswell..... when i shift from a stop, i just know to be quick about shifting into reverse, to keep from constantly grinding the gears.
ok, so this just happened to come up tonight with one of my friends...she has a civic...does the same thing...with that said...if you guys are having problems shifting into first, are we talkin as you slow down? Maybe you need to work on your downshifting? I dont know, I've never had a problem with grinding into first, unless I was a little ahead of my foot work...I've been driving stick so long Its like clockwork now...I couldn't tell you my tendencies anymore!
I always do this when I back out of my garage:
1) Depress clutch and turn on engine
2) Keep clutch depressed and step on the brake while releasing e-brake
3) With your foot still on the brake and the other foot on the clutch, shift from neutral to fourth, fourth to neutral, then neutral to reverse.

I was just going to say that- If I shift into another gear before I go into reverse it doesnt happen as much- But keep in mind this happens after I just turn the car on- so its not like I was moving- lol
The good old 1-2 Shift will have to work for now-

We're having the same problem with our Box. I'm having the dealer take a look at it when we take it in for the first oil change. Very very notchy shifting into first gear occassionally. Sometimes the clutch will be fully depressed and it will not shift into reverse (the clutch has to be left out a little before gearshift will fully settle into reverse position). Sometimes the clutch will be fully depressed, with my other foot on the brake, and she won't turn over when the engine is cold (it's acting as if the clutch isn't fully engaged).
I don't know. Just take it to the dealer and tell them to fix it.

I have seen quite a few postings on the web about the synchros in the XB. There was a car magazine reveiw of the car where they drove it for a year around the country. The tranny had to be rebuilt at 30,000 miles because the synchros disintegrated.
I figure the warranty will take care of it when it happens.
