How did this thread derail into grinding in first while still moving when originally it was about puttin it in reverse right after starting up?

First off, trying to put it in 1st when your still rolling is a retarded thing to do in any situation IMO

Yes, but i was a bit less vague. Theres many different synchros in the transmission.
We can share

Hmm lets see...

Downshifting to first from 2nd letting the engine slow you down
Downshifting to first to climb a steep driveway
Downshifting to first because you are stuck in traffic on the freeway

I guess I am not very smart.

1. First is a starting gear, not one to downshift into like the others
2. You don't downshift to climb a steep driveway, you would normally put it in neutral, stop, and shift into first
3. Again, same as #1

See I am not very smart. I guess my logic tells me on a steep driveway I don't need to come to a complete stop.

So on the freeway at 3-5 miles a hour you would rather be in 2nd riding the clutch to stay slow enough instead of just being in 1st and if you went to 1st you would stop completely in traffic and then put it in?

I forgot what I was going to add....

First I had no idea I was suppposed to be downshifting all the way to first gear....I've never done that, am I wrong??

Second and back ON TOPIC {sorry} My gears just starting grinding recently...I have almost 24,000 miles on my xB and then today my brakes didnt wanna work and I had to slam them and there was all this noise!!! Scared the crappie outta me. First grinds too sometimes but honestly Im not paying attention to exactly when it does it it just does.

Now my husbands RS2, as I have stated before somewhere, shifts like its dipped in butter!!! I just dont get it! Mine NEVER drove like his not even from day one!!!
It makes me jealous. lol

Im starting to think MAYBE theres a problem here that is not driver related.

Wow, looks like I opened up a can of worms with this thread. Well, now we can create a SCION Grinding club, and find all of the different ways we can tackle a driveway.

Actually, where I grew up, we had to put bricks behind the wheels of my family's cars in addition to emergency brakes because our driveway was so steep (lived on a side of a mountain in Bisbee, AZ).

All in all, I'm now very worried about the dreaded 30,000mile barrier/tranny rebuild.
But, that's what warranties are for. But I will be trying out that trick of 1st->Reverse before engaging the clutch.

Let me retract what i said in order to rephrase. Obviously some read WAY too much between the lines.

Downshifting to 1st in a roll *over 15mph* is NOT recommended! I work on transmissions for a living, certified by ASE, you can argue with me all day if you want.

Also downshifting to 1st from second "letting the engine slow you down" is O-so stupid if you ask me. You have brakes, USE THEM. Unnessesary wear and tear on your trans.

I've had to change out countless busted 1st gears because people do this.

You have your opinions based on your teaching and personal knowledge and I have mine based on my driving experience. I'm going to leave it at that.

Hey wait....wait....dont leave...

If you dont want to talk about it here PLEASE PM me!!!

Heres why...My husband MAKES me downshift to save the brakes but I HATE doing it bc it sounds like Im f in up my car!!! How should I be doing this??

And NO brake and clutch at the same time??

Please let me know....I am probably wrong but when my husband isn't with me I just use neutral and then brake.

BTW another thing I've notice is that the gear can be taken out with the clutch in. Is that normal??

Thanks op for opening this thread I NEED THIS INFO!!! I HATE AUTO cars!!!

i agree that the clutch "pops" into and out of gears, (out in two, and in in Rev.) i noticed i have to let the car roll a little in either direction before putting it in reverse (while keeping the foot on the clutch)

You should do something called rev matching. Here's in order what you should be doing:
1) Step on the clutch
2) Simultaneiously slide the shifter into a lower gear and give the throttle a quick, amazingly precise jab to rev the engine to exactly the rpm it needs to be at in the lower gear.
3)Quickly let out the clutch

It takes some practice, but is easily mastered with the xB. The xB's flywheel is very light weight thus causing the revs to climbs very quickly, so just practice by blipping (meaning tap) the gas before letting the clutch out in the lower gear when downshifting. After a while you will get the feel of what rpm the lower gear will let out in, and how much you'd need to tap the gas to pre set the motor to the speed the lower gear will cause it to turn. People have been in my car before and been like, "whoa, that was sweet"

Braking is what you'd want to be doing. Yes, you could use the clutch to slow you down. But thats what brakes are there for. Brake pads and shoes are 100x simpler to replace than a clutch disc + throw out bearing + pilot bearing.

Yes it will come out of gear if you force it out, BUT you do not want to be doing this. Use the clutch to disengage as well.

Suddenly driving a stick seems so hard and complicated! lol

I hate that rev sound. So I have a technique I try to use so it downshifts slowly but I dont want to wear anything out. Its bad enough my mileage is HIGH!! And now I think all these things are wrong.

{Btw my other car was a turbo beetle and it need work when the miles were still low, not stick related but work so now I get nervous. My Jeep Cherokee Sport never needed anything but regulars and it had almost 90,000 miles when I traded it in}

Thanks for the help!!! Sorry if we hi jacked!!

BTW the Im not trying to take the gear out...if it gets hit or touched while Im driving it comes right out with EASE! That's why I asked.

Thank you for your help and time.

I drive like a maniac, and I downshift to 1st (in motion) all the time. But I always rev match, and the tranny never fights me. However. . . the 1-2 shift is horrible (and thus easy to grind).

If you properly rev match, stay under redline, and don't jerk the car, shifting to 1st should be fine.

^ and that's not for engine breaking, but for hard hard turns (and mountain runs).

Back to the original topic of reverse gear grinding....am I just stupid but dosen't pretty much every manual ever made do this? I was under the impression that there was no synchronization for reverse? That's what apparently makes the Chevy "getrag" transmission so awesome.
