yeah. . . a lot of people I know with automatics drive incorrectly (they rest their left foot on the brake). That will also cause premature brake wear

When brakes start to wear, the noise you will hear is not when you are braking, but when you are starting to move from a standstill. All brakes come with sensor warnings built right into them.
When brakes start to wear, a very high pitched sound will be heard when the car is starting to move.
If you are hearing noise when braking, it could be only brake dust in the linings. a simple blowing out of the brake linings will solve this problem. If you are hearing a grinding noise when braking, this is a bad sign that the rotors might be damaged from a metal to metal condition.
I hope this post helps, and I'm betting that with only 12,000 miles, it's nothing but brake dust.
Keep us posted.

This is most likely caused due to the fact that they were taught to drive by their parents long before they had drivers ed.

I think old folks developed the habit from originally learning to drive a stick in the old days. Then had nothing to do with their left foot for lack of a clutch pedal and just started doing it.

Not anywhere else. Thats the catch. Pads are cheap and this insures them future $s. Sell em cheap pads once and give them free cheap pads for life. They will think they are actually getting something for free. LOL
