question about rim sizes & gas mileage
ok we just recently got a new scion xB 3.0, and we had 17" rims put on it, is that going to affect gas in any way? is there a formula for figuring this out?
Edit: the size is 215/40/R17 any help is greatly appreciated!
thanks in advance

in general: more weight = lower gas mileage... more energy is required to move more weight...
if your 17's are heavier than the stock steelies then yes, your milage will probably suffer... i recall seeing the stock steelies weigh in at 17.5 lbs(?)... the increase in tire width will probably hurt a little bit too... larger contact patch = more road friction...
regardless, i doubt it will hurt mileage dramatically... unless they are really heavy... i don't have any formulas... but from experience, i went the other route and picked up lightweight 15's (12.6 lbs) on OEM tires and it increased my avg. mileage from the low 32's to the mid 33's... about a 4% increase...
good luck!
