I made it to page 8 in this thread, which is damn good considering I know nothing about cars and didn't understand 3/4 of what was said here.

Can someone just answer my questions as though I was 8 years old and had attention span problems?

I do about 80 miles of stop and go driving in my car, 7 days a week. I am HIGHLY interested in increasing my MPG.

So, will my typical driving situation work with this mod? If so, do I need to make a new snorkel thingy like others have?

I just want a final okay before I start ripping things off my car. I'm scared.

Default Problem when snorkel removed!

Hey- I have an 06' XA and when I just took the snorkel off, the engine shuts of after it runs for about 4 seconds! Am I doing something wrong??

Sounds like you removed the wrong part. Did you undo clamps to remove what you did? Put that part back on if you did. and remove the lightweight plast snorkle piece. It's held on by one small screw and is inserted into the BOTTOM of the airbbox.

Ok, my turn to be the n00b asking the the "" questions:

Has anyone taken their box in for service since removing the snorkel? Did the mechanic say anything about it?

I think someone mentioned in one of these snorkel threads about humidity. I'm thinking about doing the mod but it's snowing/freezing rain right now (Can you believe it? Mid-April snow!!!). Is it still a good idea to do this?

Finally, and I'm sorry about all the questions, but what about a car wash? If you take the snorkel off, wouldn't the under-carriage blaster shoot water almost directly at the intake?

Thank you one and all!

keep in mind, the biggest difference you can get is from adjusting your driving style. The K&N might be worth it since you also have a filter that you can clean instread of replacing. But the change in mpg will be modest compared to what you can do with your habits.

Managed to get 36mpg on the last tank. Changed my driving habits a bit. 65 mph on freeway. shifting at 3k. Just driving chill.

All logical questions!
As far as "humidity", its not changing what enters the airbox, just removes the restricted tube it enters through!
The hole it leaves open on the airbox faces forward (and its still pretty well tucked behind everything else), so water from below shouldn't be a problem.
Now, I can in NO WAY guarantee there won't be some kind of unforeseeable problem, but at 49 myself, and having owned over 40 cars - and having worked on all of them - I felt it was a safe enough mod to do myself.

Hiya Jenna, since youre kind of new at this please read the quote below:

ak speaks from experience. The way Ive been going about getting better mileage is trying 1 thing at a time, if it works...keep doing it, if it doesnt...you know where this is going. If you change the way you use your right foot on the gas pedal thats where you'll find your biggest gas savings, after that, try taking off the snorkel, see if that works for you...after that try the k&n filter, after that......The reason I do it this way is you might not have to do anything to your car, maybe its all in your right foot, but then again, with the above mentioned mods maybe you can save even more gas....hope this helps, ask all the questions you need to, there are plenty of nice peeps in here, good luck!

If you have little critters where you park you may find them getting inside the air box without the snorkel.

It's funny, at first when you said "little critters" I thought you were talking about children...

Interestingly enough, since reading this thread, I've had my best tank ever and I haven't even pulled the snorkle yet! I just hit the halfway mark on the tank and went over 180 miles...maybe I'll do better without the snorkle. I'm gonna try it on my next tank.
