Default Roof Rack....

I tried searching for this, but I couldn't find it. Forgive me if this has been posted.

I ordered a BSP xB on 12/31/05. The options I got were an armrest, roof rack, wheels, and floormats. I was nervous from the beginning about the roof rack, because I had visions of me sitting in my nice new car in the rain, and getting dripped on from shotty holes drilled into my roof. My salesman assured me that the rack would be factory installed and would arrive with the vehicle.

Needless to say, the day came to pick it up and it was sans roof rack. Armrest too, but that's not my concern. He told me there was a mix up in the ordering process and that they would get it to me as soon as possible. I just received a call from them and they told me it was there and that I could talk to service about getting it put on. Once put through to service, they informed me that they needed a substantial amount of time with the vehicle, becuase they have never put one on before. I told him to not make the appointment because I wasn't sure if I wanted to even do it anymore.

What kind of installation is involved with the Yakima roof rack? Please let me know, because I really have no idea what to do here.

Thanks!

The Yakima rack is a removeable jamb mounted rack...no holes are drilled. I bought mine aftermarket (a hell of a lot cheaper BTW) and it took me an hour to install it and that included installing lock cores and the Basket Case basket. I can take it off as one hole unit in about a minute.

I bought mine from rackwarehouse.com. Basic usint like what you'll get from Scion was $180

shouldnt be that hard to install.. was at a M&G where 1 member traded for one... took about 5min to unhook from 1 roof, carry it over a few cars and install on the other xB...quickest parking lot/m&g install we've ever done.... and no drilling

Moving from one xB to another is nothing...but it does take some time to set up the bars and feet the correct way on a new install.

So, does it scratch up the jambs?

yeah... there probably is a bit more set up time compared to moving an assembled rack from car to car..... but i dont think it would take a "substantial" amount of time like the service rep mentioned

NOpe. The most time consuming thing for me was getting the tension just right on the feet and getting the distance between the bars correct so I could but on the basket.

I doubt those racks can support much weight though. The Yakima rack puts the load over the jambs. Mine can do 165lbs.

Cierre 30/m;
Since you have no idea what brand/type I installed your doubts are unfounded.

I'd be willing to bet it's the typical universal type, since there isn't one made specifically for the xB that I know of. I'm also assuming you didn't drill and tap into the sheet metal outboard of the rain gutters, so that means you bolted it to the sheetmetal of the roof which gives no support whatesoever.

But hey...why not post pics of this install you did (or at least provide details) so you can prove me wrong? It's no mystery as to why Yakima and Thule do such a booming business and the universal type are only sold through places like JC Whitney.

If you mean RV-Inno, I checked them out before getting my Yakima and while they are nice, they were significantly more expensive than the Yakima. My Yakima base setup was $200 with free shipping. The RV-Inno ski and snowbaord holder that doesn't even come with an interchangeable base system is $220. The base system is even more.

can get the base for $200 at a local shop and another $200 for snowboard racks or you can get a cargo bin that you can custom paint for $500($400 for black or silver) which will fit 2 six footer surfboards or 4 snowboards. it's not a bad deal for something that look nicer a lot nicer(my opinion)

WEll, if your doing it just for looks then thats all a matter of opinion. Simply put though, both do the same job and for $329 I got a complete base system, lock cores, windjammer, rack pads, Basket Case and Baskecase net. For another 30 dollars I got a set of Yakima Buttondowns off ebay for carting the snowboards. I can put a family of fours luggage up top along with my longboard or snowboards and maintain all my interior space.

So $320 as opposed to at least 5 or 600 for what amounts to the same basic design? For a 15k dollar car it was a no-brainer.

Hey Pat,

Just ask the dealer to give you the rack in the box (assuming its the Yakima). Take it home and install it yourself. With taking my time, I got mine assembled and on the car in about an hour. I take mine on and off all the time. They take about 5 minutes to attach. Good luck.

Thats the way to do it, but I would still buy it elsewhere, you'll save a bundle on the same exact rack system.
