Default scan tool. link error.

I got a 06 xb throwing CEL and VSC. It seems to only be happening when the gas tank is 3/4 to 1/4 full. I hook up my scan tool and got a link error every time. I replaced my gas cap hoping that would solve it, but no.
I took it to autozone today and they got the link error as well.
How do get the scanner to work, so i can see whats wrong with the car?
Thanks

May be because late 06 runs different software (CAN) from earlier cars (OBD2). Make sure the code reader is CAN compatible.

Why is mine running CAN protocol then? It's 04/06 production, so it's 06.5.

I have an 06. Im guessing half way thru the production year they switched over to the CAN. So some of you will still have OBII. But if you have CAN system, typically most shops have Snap-On MODIS, or BOSCH which allows you to the read the CAN system. If it doesnt it needs the updated software to read it.

My '06.5 runs 11 bit CAN. CAN is simply one of the communications protocols in OBD-II. Most scan code readers should have no problems reading it, since it's one of the commonest protocols. IIRC, Toyota changed some wiring in the '06 xBs. It didn't change OBD-11 communications protocols.
