Hi, all. When I lift my foot off of the accelerator while I'm moving, the mpgs jump up to 9999. Otherwise, it works just fine. Does this happen to anyone else?

I think the ScanGuage has TWO mpg readouts: average and instantaneous. You might just be seeing the instantaneous reading go aff the chart when the computer sees road speed versus throttle position? Just a thought . . .

 

yeah, and once you take your foot off the gas, the car isn't using very much fuel, so if you could maintain that speed without using the throttle, you'd get that mpg, but ofcourse, you will eventually coast to a stop.

like in my explorer, rolling downhill with my foot off the gas, it would say "Instant MPG: 99

 

yep, sounds like instantaneous mpg. 9999mpg would be nice though..

 

Scions, like many cars, are equipped with a fuel shutoff on deceleration. If the car is in gear and you are coasting it shuts off fuel to the engine. This helps with compression braking, and saves fuel, since the drivetrain will keep the engine spinning w/o needing fuel.

You can use this to your advantage, as soon as you see a red light or something you'll need to stop for ahead, take your foot off the gas and coast for as long as possible. Do the same when coming off highway exit ramps, coast as far down the ramp as possible. I can get a 1-2mpg boost to my average mpg with one long exit ramp.

 

OK, here is one of those questions: Is it bad to place your automatic in nuetral to coast (for better fuel economy) and then put it back in drive while still traveling 30 or more mph?

I've always been curious to know.

 

My scangauge has never registered over 275 instantaneous mpg, and that's in neutral coasting at 60 or 70 mpg.

 

In neutral it won't read 9999 because the engine is using fuel to keep itself running. But while in gear and my foot off of the gas, it'll jump to 9999. I understand why it would say that, but I'd like to know if this happens to anyone else who owns a scangauge II in a xB. Mine might be a defect if it shouldn't be reading THAT high.

 

It happens to me all the time. As I said above, it is because of the fuel cutoff. Completely normal and expected. And a good thing that helps give the xB sch good MPG.

the highest I ever got coasting with mine is a little over 400.

 

That is likely because you have an automatic. But I'm not sure as I've never driven an auto xB with a scangauge.
