The red "fog" light on the rear is used so that someone following you in the fog can see you and not plow into to you. My Land Rover had those too. The red color is to identify the rear of a vehicle in low visability i.e. dense daytime fog. They are at least as bright as brake lights...but as the Brits say "Do not use the rear fog lights in clear conditions as not to 'dazzle' other drivers."
