Default What a difference the in-cabin air filter makes!

I installed a homemade air filter about 8 months ago, and look at how much crud it filters out of the cabin air! My car has never been smoked in. This is just from normal operation.

Thanks to ScionLife and rbloedow for posting the installation instructions:
https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=20753

I'm going to trim down the new one and replace the old one now. After seeing the results, I'd definitely recommend this to all owners.

Can this post be issued to all new members so they don't have to read every thread to find it?
Moderators, can threads like the cabin ail filter be sent, perhaps as a PM to new members automaticlly?

That information is already in the ScionLife Tech section along with many other interesting and valuable items.

Poke around here at ScionLife, you will find all sorts of things you might not have expected are here.

====

Just for additional info, here are the commercial filters I've tracked down that are "drop-in" for the Scions, along with measurements for those making their own 'DIY' filters:

====
xA/xB CABIN AIR FILTER: Toyota 88568-52010, WIX 24900, DENSO 4531014, Puro C38188, MicronAir TY00166P,
====
Toyota Echo (00-04), RAV4 (01-05), Scion (03-05)
Cabin Air Filter 88568-52010
Style: Air Filter Panel
Service: Cabin Air
Media: Batt/Fiber
Length: 8.504
Width: 7.716
Height: 0.709
====

Just think - if you don't have a filter installed, that is what would be deposited on the inside of your Scion - and your lungs...

(I recommend replacing the cabin air filter every three to six months, depending on how much 'stuff' it catches. I'd rather have that stuff in the filter than on my or my car's interior...)

I bought the filter WEEKS ago, but have yet to cut it up and
install it.

This thread is prompting me to get on that!

I made mine. I'll get about 5 of them out of a $10 filter. It does a great job, too. I immediately noticed less dust and a quieter fan.

Is that stuff 'smog'? Or just dirt from dusty roads and drives?
We don't have smog here
Short of using the perfumey suggestions, would a charcoal additive like one poster mentioned take care of skunk and other such 'road-kill'? How about sheep, chicken, and or cow manuer? Told ya we don't have smog....

The local discount auto parts chain sells the Purolator filter for about 6.50. I've gone through two in 15k miles.
Speaking of dirt..... how many get your car all cleaned up and after driving for just a few days in clear sky conditions find the rear hatch covered in a film of black soot like material?
Man, what is that stuff and where is it coming from???

I had been thinking about it but hadn't even purchased the filter. Went to Wal-Mart, bought the filter, cut it and installed it in about 45 minutes. The 20x25" universal filter with the activated carbon liner will yield SIX filters for about $8!!!

Thanks for the reminder post!!!

This was my first diy project a while back and definately worth it.
Found out it also helps to filter "mysterious" smells that show up suddenly!

I'm doing this TODAY! One question though.....have any of you noticed decreased output from your A/C with the filter in place? Our A/C is already kinda weak, so I'd hate to do anything to make it worse.

The A/C is weak, but the air flow is from a fan.
So it's more up to the fan pressure then anything.

Did this on both of mine today.
Got the WebAbsorber from WalMart today for about 8 bucks. Only took about 10-15 minutes to measure, cut and install.

This is a great "mod". Especially for a cheapo like me...
