On the xA and xB A/C units (at least in the 2005's - I can't personally vouch for the 2004's) the controller for the system partially opens the 'recirculated air' door when the temp is turned down to the last three or four clicks (this is per service manuals, TSB, and personal observation).

The filter is ONLY in the "outside air" path, and does not affect recirc air at all - there should be NO noticible reduction of airflow or cooling when using the air conditioner with a filter.

Confirming this I have been unable to observe an appreciable difference in cooling or air volume from the vents, even when I purposely blocked about 3/4 of the filter drawer with cardboard as a quick test).

That's good to know. Thanks. I went to my local Lowe's last night and bought a 3M Filtrete Micro Allergen filter. They were on sale (normally $12...I got it for like $8.50) and I cut 6 filters out of it. I did it to both the xA and xB as soon as I got home. Very easy! I love this place.

I just went ahead and installed a DIY air filter into the empty tray of my xB. I got the Web Absorber kind (from Home Depot - couldn't find it at Wal-Mart) and it came out great. Score another one for ScionLife

It really sucks to be cheap I went to 'Wally-World' for the DYI cabin air filter....Found a nice Arm-N-Hammer / baking soda one (less than $4.00 // makes six though - I guess you can't blame me for that :? ).
Got it home....removed the cardboard frame - this is the part that sucks - now I'm bleeding. This filter has wire supports (they are sharp)

Plus, the cheapskate that I am I bought the 'Vent-Visor' window shades....Not sure I'm liking them - kind of cheesy

Oh well

Uh, because it's an economy car? It doesn't come with floor mats, cruise control, security system, alloy wheels, fog lights, etc., either.

Many cars don't even have a place to PUT a filter if you want one - we're lucky 'cause we DO. :D
