What mods would improve mpg on an xB?

What mods will make it worse?

Install a raw egg between your foot and the throttle

Larger diameter wheels (perhaps)

Echo final drive gears (perhaps)

Intake and exhaust will actually allow it to get better MPG if you ride it gently.Usually people tend to ride it harder then though thus getting worse MPG.

If you can get it through JC Whitney, then it must be true. Wait 2 tanks before resetting your trip and then calculate...that way you have 600+ miles on 10 gallons.

Larger wheels is a mixed blessing IMO. Yes you can get lighter wheels which might help, but unless you stick with 15" size you'll need lower profile tires, which for the most part are designed for better traction/grip, which also tends to increase rolling resistence, so mileage suffers. Add in the fact that you spent $500 to save mabe 25-50 a year in gas, and it's a hard sell.

If you have a fat spouce, here's the perfect way to get them to shave that butt down some! "It will help our environment honey!"

I saw something interesting once on a show and i think you should try it. Take a piece of string and tie a wieght to the end. Now take that string and hold it in your hand so it hangs about 6 inches. Swing it in a circular motion. Pretty easy huh? Now let it hang to about 12 inches and swing it again. It should be considerable harder to get it moving and keep it moving. Let it out more, and it becomes even harder to keep moving. This is the theory of rolling resistance. It takes more work to move the mass if the over all diameter is larger. Sure sticky tires play a roll, but its the overall larger diameter of the wheel attached to the hub that makes it harder to move the car.

Good point. What I meant to say, and did so sloppily, was that larger diameter tires might improve mileage, simply because they slow the engine down a bit at cruise. It's a poor man's way of changing the final drive ratio. Changing other parameters, such as width or tread compound might well suck up any gain you make!

I note that bBs come with 65 series tires in Japan, whereas our xBs come with 60 series tires. It would be an interesting experiment to try 70 or 75 series tires on the stock wheels, but unfortunately there don't seem to be any 185/75R15 tires out there. You can get a 185R14 (80 series) tire that is about 2 inches larger in diameter than stock, so if you could scrounge a set of Echo wheels you could give this a try. It would slow the engine down by 8 percent from the stock tires, which would be a drop of about 240RPM at 60MPH with a 5-speed. This might have a measureable effect on mileage, but I wouldn't expect more than a mile per gallon.

George
