Default What is this NOISE?

I have a rattle noise that is very distinct when I am stopped, in DRIVE and the AC is on. I turn off the AC and it stops. I put it in Park and it stops.
Appears to be coming from inside the hood but cannot pinpoint it.
Since I am only a three month owner, (2005 xB) is this normal or ??

thanks

Peace, love and Canker sores

I get the same thing, it also goes away if you put it on neuteral, maybe it has to do with the RPMs the car has on drive while stopped. Something to keep gas consumption down?

i get a rattle only in first gear. Cannot not pinpoint it. It only happens when you first hit the "friction zone" on the clutch. Feels like metal on metal sound. I have no idea what could be the problem. Everything is tight under the hood. I did just install an intake, but everything is solid there.....

I am convinced this is not a normal sound and taking it back to dealer next week. Will keep the group posted.

thats your exhaust piping. You'll notice it between 1,700 to 2,200 rpm.

OR

when your car is in gear

nothing is wrong with your car, the dealership wont tell you anything.

I had the same thing it turn out that it was the hood rattling. Adjusted it tighter and fixed the problem. You can check by using your fingures and pushing down and letting up if it moves even a little then that could be your problem also. Hope this helps.

Mine was the little part connected to the upper half of the air box. It has hoses going in and out and the metal bracket that holds them needed tightening. It would only vibrate in gear at idle.. the rest of the time you never heard it.

my rattle turned out to be a hard line bracket that holds the fuel lines to the firewall i think the brake line may share the same bracket/clip piece took two dealers to figure it out and then proceed to tell me it wasn't covered

ok, but the rattle i feel is on my foot with the clutch....Is it possible to hit something so hard underneath that it damages the gears??? I really didn't hit that speedbump very hard.

Maybe you should have it checked out. That could be the throw out bearing if you feel it in the clutch. Hope it turns out to be something minor.

I also had this same rattle. I zip-tied that piece down and it went away.

If i buy a performace clutch, wouldn't the rattle go away or would it still be there after they install it? Someone told me to check the clutch lines but in don't know how to do that.
