Default What is the purpose of the steering wheel lock?

When I put my 06 xb in park (and engine off), the steering wheel can lock in place if you give it some movement. What is the purpose of it?

Too make it harder to steal. Cars used to have the ignition in the dash, but all a thief had to do was rip the wires loose and twist the right ones together to steal the car. With the column lock even if they got the car running they couldn't turn the wheel so they couldn't drive it away.
