Default xA & xB values going UP

www.kbb.com

Gas prices are doing WONDERS for the resale value of our cars...

It's virtually unheard of for cars like ours to appreciate at all...much less in their first year.

I'm amazed at the price of used xB's, considering that there are brand new ones available on dealers' lots around here...

Also considering that you'll pay a higher interest rate on a used car loan, and often have a more difficult time qualifying...

Weird.

Or it may just be the usual used car lot "goin' fishin" pricing scenario... actually paying the asking price for a used car from a lot generally isn't the way it's done...

If there won't be any 2007 xB's as rumored, then, yeh, the price will definitely go up...

Here too - but I (and a few people I work with who are currently car shopping) have noticed that most 4-cylinder cars around here have been hit with what the dealers are calling a 'market adjustment'...you'll actually see it itemized as such on some of the stickers...to the tune of $3K to $6K...yeah, three to six THOUSAND dollars over MSRP for the econo-cars...and when pointed out to the dealers, they get a ____-eating grin & say nothing more than "gas prices".

Course, with Scion's pure pricing, it's kind of hard for them to price gouge like the rest of them are...except on the used ones.

Yeah...but the 'books' don't usually inflate the price of used cars...the dealers do. That's why I was really blown away when I saw this. Even NADA has them higher than when they were new, albeit slightly lower than kbb.

Cars are supposed to lose the most value in the first year...makes me glad I bought these when I did.

I couldn't get a good trade-in at the Scion dealer so I bought the wife's Xb at Carmax since they gave the best trade-in price, even though the 06 Xb with 10K was a little more than new but still better than the deal at the Scion dealer.

Xb prices are high here in NC too.

I paid a little too much for my used 05 xB but it was a little cheaper than new (right around 15) but it also had intake, strut, rims. So i figured it was alright but even when i bought mine the dealer was telling me that the xB's really retain thier value and mods that you do actually play into the price, unlike most other cars where after market parts get you very little return on investment. My 2 cents on the topic.

More mind-boggling than their book value, this is what dealers are actually ASKING for them (the first one is obviously either a typo or has a buttload of mods):

Alchemist80's experience should be instructive, particularly in a large metro area with several Scion dealers and new cars on the lots...

Dealers will occasionally overprice a given car on purpose, because it's part of their display, their curb appeal factor, set right out in the front row... They really don't want to sell that particular car, it draws too many buyers into the lot, who are quickly diverted to other available models...

I just sold mine and got a good price.. But forget Kelly blue book prices.. or NADA.. Its BS.

Here's why.. Are you going to pay more for a used xB than a new one? I dont think so... Look at edmunds.com and get the real street pricing... Thats the one to go by...

Dont get me wrong... the resale price is good... but not what KBB.com says... thats BS...

Scions fixed pricing is both good and bad...

i took my car to carmax and got an estimate then used that as a bargaining chip with the dealer to prove i had options... they matched my trade in offer + i saved on sales tax... not a bad deal

anyway its nice to see a thread like this, i origonally ordered a tc but i ended up getting and xb instead... since then some things have changed and i dont need the cargo space as much and i am having a big of buyers remorse... its nice to know i wont take too big of a hit should i want to sell it

That's why I posted the ACTUAL asking prices for dozens of xB's across the country...to illustrate that it's not just kbb or NADA (resources that consumers and dealers use DAILY to value cars).

The whole point of this thread was to show something that NEVER happens - cars increasing beyond retail value in their first year.

Scion's fixed pricing will only be as 'bad' for used values as the availability of new inventory...and judging by the asking prices for all of the used xB's I just posted (not just one or two cars placed to 'draw people in'), I'd say it's not hurting much.

ITS ALSO WORTHLESS.... Maybe some people are dumb enough to pay more for a used one than a new one... but they are few and far between...

well at 1st i thought this thread was a joke but i searched the local listings and found that xb's in my year (05) with more miles (i have under 8k) without extended warranties are going for more than what i paid for my car... say they dont sell for that much, i bet they dont go much less... this is a reflection of the demand right now because a few months before i bought my car used xb's were taking huge hits as far as depreciation goes (the listings for a dealer sold used xb in the dfw area were not even close to what they are now, 11-12k if memory serves)... this is good news, not worthless at all imo, it raises the trade in and resale value of our cars... it will not stay like this forever (if gas prices start to decline) but for now its good... i had been willing to take the initial depreciation hit since i had planned on keeping my xb for a long time, figuring it would level off after a few years like all other toyota products and make up for the initial depreciation... its nice to know the worst case scenario is not what i am currently faced with if i choose to make a move

why pay more for a used over a new? well the new will only be available for oh say 8 more months , as well as availability of them now even is very low in certain regions and during certain parts of the month.

I wouldn't do it but trust me you'd be VERY very surprised as to how often they do buy the used ones. o and you can haggle down a used scions price to make it more reasonable.

You can be in denial all you want...it doesn't change the facts.

FACT: they are valued higher than retail by the 2 most reputable, respected resources in the industry.

FACT: More than 60% of all used 2005 and 2006 Scion xBs in the US with 20,000 miles or less are listed for over MSRP (source: cars.com).

Oh, and just to assure that kbb isn't inflating the value of ALL cars, I chose to run a 'control' value - a 2004 Corvette Z06 - a car that one would EXPECT to retain significant resale value, if not GAIN value (limited edition, "high end" cars often do).

2004 Corvette Z06 MSRP - $51,585 (assuming that when someone bought it, someone didn't pay WELL OVER MSRP, as is the case with Z06's most of the time)

2004 Corvette Z06 value right now, with lower-than-average mileage (18K) - $42,795

So you see, kbb isn't just assigning higher values to ALL cars...they don't even assign a higher value to a car you'd EXPECT.

It's about gas prices...combined with Toyota's already high resale value. I say that last part because I don't EVER expect to see any American econo-box go up in value.
