xB 500 mile-trip Findings...
So I have an automatic tranny. Just drove from the bay area to San Diego today and had some interesting MPGs
Bay area to Buttonwillow, CA = 29.7 (maintained an average 65MPH real-speed, ~70 speedometer speed)
Buttonwillow to San Diego = 37.7 (maintained an average 60MPH real-speed, ~65 speedometer speed)
Grapevine was the most difficult obviously, I stayed within 4th gear most of the way up, but boy was I trucking along. If I dropped below 40MPH the car had to shift into third.
Coming down the Grapevine I decided to shift the car into neutral for the 5 miles of downhill. I coasted in drive for 1/4 mile down and then decided to shift into neutral. A couple things I noticed:
1) When you are in drive and coasting, your transmission holds you back from a "full coast". As soon as I shifted to neutral, I could feel my car "release" and start freely coast down the hill. It felt as though the transmission wouldn't allow the car to fully coast.
2) I have an ultraguage that feeds live MPG readings. When I coast normally in drive at 65MPG, I usually get around 200-225 MPG. However, when I shifted into neutral heading at the same speed, those MPGs increased to ~350MPG. I nearly hit 400MPG at one point.
3) Coasting in drive at 80MPH gives you less MPG than coasting at 65MPH. This was something that was most interesting to me and made it even more obvious for me to just shift into neutral.
Once I reached the bottom, I just shifted into drive and drove right along. There was no hard transmission jolts just a smooth shift into drive.
What are your guys' thoughts? Just thought I would like to share with the fellow xbers here!

That's all? 500 miles? You need to get out more. I do 600 miles to see my mama...
But I can not COAST:
Commonwealth of Virginia:
Quote:
? 46.2-811. Coasting prohibited.
The driver of any motor vehicle traveling on a downgrade on any highway shall not coast with the gears of the vehicle in neutral.
(Code 1950, ? 46-218; 1958, c. 541, ? 46.1-200; 1989, c. 727.)

Hmm very interesting. I am sure that is probably a law as well in Cali since cali has every law imaginable. Although, how would a highway patrol know you are in neutral? haha... hard to ticket that I would think.
