xB Extended Warranty
#2
I've had five Toyota's over the last 23 years. None had extended warantees and never needed them. Given Toyota's reliability record, I did'nt even consider an extended warantee. Also........................ Consumer Reports has backed up Toyota's record and downplays extended warantees.

There is a lot to be said both ways on this subject. If you do decide on one, make sure you shop around. There have been wide descrepencies posted on this site between different dealers for the Toyota extended warranty.

Extended Warranty
I have shopped around and found the Scion warranty to be most cost effective. However, I am not going to make that purchase. Had one on my Sentra and never used it. Money down the drain. Thanks

I think the question you have to ask yourself is how long do you plan of having your box?
If you are the average car owner, and will get a new car 3 to 4 years from now and you put roughly the normal amount of miles on your car, it's probably a waste of money. Toyotas are good cars, bottom line.
If you plan on hanging on to the box for many years, then you may want to consider it.

I got one with mine. I had a Nissan with a failed $900 sensor shortly after the factory warranty expired. So even the most reliable vehicle can have expensive and unpredictable failures. I figured I could splurge on the Scion warranty since I very rarely buy an extended warranty on anything else. Unlike a TV or DVD player, I need my car running so I can work...

I bought the warranty the day I took home the box, but when I got the warranty papers, what was writen in the warranty was different than what I read at the dealership. So I canceled the warranty, got my refund, and spoiled myself with more useful toys.

what warranty papers? I paid 1600 for my extended warranty, after they started listing the price of parts, 1500+ for the ecu for instance, sensors ranging from 500 - 1200, darn right I'm getting the extended warranty, got the gap insurance as well

GAMBLING ANYONE?
What is an extended warranty? A wager between two parties. Look at
what each party brings to the table:
The manufacturer, with all his collective experience, design specs,
intimate knowledge of assembly techniques, tolerances, quality
control, etc., is betting that the product will not fail in any
manner specified in the warranty during the warranty period which
will cost more than the price of the warranty to repair (note who
writes up the terms of the warranty).
You, with no knowledge of the product, have only a vague fear that
it will catastrophically break down during the warranty period and
that repair of such failure will cost far more than the price of the
warranty. On what do you base this opinion? Are you intentionally
buying what you consider to be junk?
Cars, motorcycles, computers, and Zippo lighters are all
manufactured using statistical sampling techniques for quality
control. The normal warranty that comes with each is an admission
of that it is entirely possible (eventually, inevitable) that an
individual product will not live up to the quality of the group. It
allows the manufacturer to catch the odd substandard product and
bring it up to his standards of quality, without having to
exhaustively test each step of each product throughout its
manufacture. Once the product makes it through the initial warranty
period (whether it required service under that warranty or not), the
manufacturer knows that it is "up to snuff," i.e., conforms to his
specs, quality, etc. At this point, he *knows* how long it will
last. An *extended* warranty is not a safety net for the
manufacturer, it is a chance to make money, by making a wager with
the customer concerning the performance of the product -- *his*
product. He knows it better than you.
Do you wanna bet?

Another ? with 1K differnt answers.
I bought my box with the extended warrenty and GAP insurance cause i plan on having the car till it dies. That and it was my company vehicle at the time, so i was expecting to put the miles on at a rapic pace.

Another alternative is Geico's MBI (Mechanical Breakdown Insurance). Covers anything mechanical/Electrical on the car for 7years/100k miles and only costs like $25 every 6 months. That's what I took instead of the dealers extended warranty. No reason to give the dealer interest on the financing of the dealer warranty when they have a large list of exceptions to what it will cover. Geico's MBI covers everything mechanical/electrical bumper-to-bumper and you get to choose where you want it repaired.
and no, i don't work for Geico :-)
