Default xB and high speeds - not the best mixture - bag MPG

lol - my highway mileage blows. From from Florida to North Carolina today in my Scion xB, and here are my fuel consumption averages:

First Refill - 28.45mpg
Second Refil - 27.28mpg
Third refill - 25.30mpg

Hell - I average above 30mpg in 100% city traffic - I guess doing a constant 80mph really takes a toll on the small engine. That - and the whole un-aerodynamic thing, but still! I guess I shoudl probably figure in load too - I had three passengers, and luggage for the trip - A/C on too.

I have pinpointed the reason for the VERY crappy mileage on the third refill - this probably doesn't help <----link to click

I have experienced that before too. I have burned about a quarter of a tank on small trips, but I was going about 108 mph(lol). I dont know if it has a governor or what it's top speed is, but I know it was going to go much faster.

what is that reason? Hilly interstate in that area?

Weight does not much affect fuel milage at steady highway speeds.. on flat grades.

Is that what you meant?

I typically don't go over 65. I've taken my box on trips hundreds of miles long and the mileage never dips below 34. I experimented with driving at a higher speed on one trip and the mpg dropped to 28.

Just drove from Orlando to N GA. Got 32mpg the first leg and 34 the last. Avg speed 62.4 mph. Only stopped twice for food and gas.

300 miles i had two fill up 1 at starting point 2. half way there so i need 1 tank and half. reason for that.. driving at 80-105 kills it.
on the way back i filled up once and thats all needed.. speed 55-60 due to the scenic road i took.

I've read a road test that says the top speed of an xB is 109 mph. I don't know if that is governed or not.

ennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn wrong. i've gotten mine to an indicated 125 mph. on stock tires. so diameter and gauges are not off.

OK! Good for D'hotbox guy. Let's figure out just what and why...

=Headwinds count for direct additions/subtractions to top end
=so does a slight grade that we might not even notice (remember, bicyclists
=tire diameter matters hugely

why izzat? you guys know-- use the tire calulator program and look at the torque and HP curves of xB engine.

By golly gosh darn, hotbox5 you are not long winded, as I sure am, but you do put up the pith of the truth every time. And I try, poorly, to put the flesh all back on the bones

38.5 mpg consistently. Then again, various police depts in NY state tell me I'm not allowed to go over the posted limit. After losing my license for a couple/three months (7-8 years after the fact) I finally got the point. But then look at the $ I'm saving = less fill ups and less fines.
My new hobby......trying to get the stock xB over 40mpg.
ThanksMuch

i was told at the dealer when checking out the xB that it tops out at about 110mph. 125 seems kind of high. When size rims are you running and all speedometers get more and more in accurate when going at higher and higher speeds.

... anything over 3k rpms on highway.. simply kills the mpg....

I did a similar run from miami to macon, ga.. on the way up i was going 80-90... my car had horrible mileage (24 mpg)... on the way back i was steady 70-75 and got well over 35mpg....

3k is only 60 mph. lol i dont care how much gas it saves i'm not going to get run over and take an insanely longer time to drive around.
