Default xB Instrument cluster failure

My 2005 xB's instrument panel cluster just broke down - both the tac and fuel gauge stopped working. Has this happened to anyone? My dealer told me this is the first time they see a Scion with this problem. My car is immaculate and never has been in a crash. What's up with this? My car is out of warranty and the repair bill with taxes/labor is $680.00!!!! The whole instrument panel cluster is one piece and they are dropping in a new one. The round gauge cluster is connected to where the odometer/clock/warning lights panel behind the black panel. They are one piece.

If it's made by a human being, anything is possible...
I've never heard of your problem happening before but I'm sure there is a 1st time for everything!

I would say to replace the cluster itself. Look online for a replacement. I have seen them so for as little as $150. Course you could just check the wire harness yourself and make sure the connections are tight.

Remove 1 plastic screw over the idiot light section.
Plastic cover pops off.
Remove 3 screws that hold cluster in place.
Lift up and out and the cluster pops right out.
Check harness.

BTW... if you do replace your cluster, the donor clusters mileage will now read on your speedo. Mileage is not kept on the ECU, its stored in the speedo cluster itself.

Default Thanks everyone

Actually I took apart the instrument cluster based on the instructions here and checked the fuse too. All the wires were intact/fuse ok but it sounded like "static" coming from the inside of the instrument cluster, so I guess the dealer was right - it did go out due to an electrical short inside the panel. PS...be careful for anyone who works changing needles and face...you damage it and it costs $400.00 without labor!!!!!!

wow, get the one off ebay.
its too easy to do your self, your car is out of warrenty anyway.
if it ends up not being your problem (and it most liklt is)
you could always sell it to someone elts for way more then $75

My 05' is doing the same thing. It started with the RPM gauge now the fuel gauge is not working right. It is past warranty so I don't think they are not going to pay for parts or labor. Is it hard to replace? Any info. would be great. thanks

Default RE: Instrument Cluster Failure

My warranty was expired 3 weeks after the warranty. I contacted Scion directly
at 866-707-2466 and literally told them how angry I was and how I will never buy a product from them or ever recommend any one of their vehicles. They were nice and told me they will reimburse me for parts and labor. Be aware, the instrument cluster is $400.00 excluding labor and taxes, my bill totaled near $700.00 after all was done. Also be aware the odometer's computer is in the instrument cluster not on the car's central computer. They have to download the old odometer reading to the new instrument cluster panel. This sucks becuase the instrument cluster is a piece of cake to remove and replace(just a few screws and it pops out)

no its super simple.
one plastic screw to remove the cover/ dash piece thing, 3 screws to remove the cluster itsself and 1 electrical harness.
takes every bit of 2 minets.
and then you just slap the new one in.
the only thing thats a problem is your ODO is stored by the cluster not your computer.
so you eather just have to deal with the different milage reading, or have the dealer set the correct milage.

I just re-read my post here from way back when and i noticed i forgot to inform everyone that indeed i did have a club member who did have his cluster stop working. He traded it in to his local Scion dealership where im sure they replaced it before reselling it.

To the poster above me, try calling Scion with the number listed a few posts above and voice your complaint and see what happens.

bump because i found this thread very helpful

i have an 05 xb and the tach intermittently doesn't work. sometimes even the fuel and speed don't work also. i also noticed that sometimes it takes a minute of driving before anything start working so it sounds like ill need to replace my cluster as well.

while the used clusters on ebay are attractively priced, my reservation w/ getting a used piece is that it could have the same issue or seems like it'll likely get the same issue sooner than later.. has there been any new info on this issue since?

finally, i was wondering if anyone has dissected the gauge cluster further. i also have a 99 miata and the mileage is stored on the cluster, but the ODO is actually a separate module in the cluster that can be removed and placed in another cluster (i've done this successfully). it would be nice if the xB had a similar, replaceable, module

thanks!

I pickup up a cluster from local pull a part for $25. Member in SC had hers quit and no parts local. I keep thinking there was an issue with some cluster failures.
