Ok i searched didnt find what I was looking for so here...
I got my tax notice in the mail today. taxes on my xB are $362.98 for a year. Well I think that is high. Almost $100 more than my payment. It has it classified as Body Style SU which i take to mean SUV. Has anyone tried to call and get them to change this? If so were you successful? Those three letters make taxes and insurance go up. My insurance company has it listed as a van. So why would the tax office and DMV have it listed as a SUV? HELP!!!!

Property Tax I guess. :? I am not the best @ this tax thing. I guess I will know when I need to pay them in a couple of years...

yeah, SC had that yearly property tax thing... what a PITA (you had to report millage and stuff).

Anyway, it's a sub compact wagon, not an SUV. Make sure you argue that point.. should save there and insurance

Mine is about the same here in Taxachusetts. I tried talking to the tax collector and then the city clerk and kept on getting the run around. Good luck trying to change how the state judges your box.

Ok well I called them yesterday. here is what I can remember from the convo, it only lasted a few seconds.

"I need to talk to someone about the classification of my car, it isnt an SUV like you have it"

"What kind of car is it"

"It's a Scion xB, something put out by toyota"

"What does it look like"

"A really small van"

"That is why, it would be classified as an SUV"

"It isnt anything like an SUV, it's a 4 Cyl"

"It still has the body style of an SUV that is why"

"but my insurance has it as a van"

"Insurance and taxes are totally different, that is just so your insurance will be lower"

"Can the classification be changed?"

"No"

My property taxes, and insurance call it a wagon...

You should've told them it's a wagon, not a van. A van is typically a bigger vehicle than a wagon, and therefore would be more for insurance & property taxes.

NHTSA has it in the "van" section, under the listing 4-Dr Station Wagon.

What the class of car is really doesn't matter in SC. They have a book that says an xb is worth x amount. Then they tax you a certain percentage of that. You can appeal that your car is not worth what they say it is, easiest way is to do a high mileage appeal, but with a new car that may be difficult. Usually you can sell your car for quite a bit more then what SC says your car is worth.

$350 isn't bad, thats only little more then my 10 year old blazer.

Man, I thought Mich. was bad ,I paid $84 for plates when I bought my xB.I think my car would "live" in another state and "vacation" in NC.

Im buying a 2005 XB manual trans, blue onyx on saturday. California has yearly taxes on vehicles? or are we talking registration stuff?

I live in Moncks Corner in Sc and the taxes here were $308. That is in Berkeley County. They have the box listed as being worth $16000. You could always move closed to the coast... There is still some land left...

Fortunately personal property taxes are a thing of the past in Illinois. From what I hear such taxes were very poorly managed. I can recall a county personal property tax representative visiting our home in my youth. I had the feeling from listening to my elders talk that it was not the value of the property one owned but who one knew that determined the taxation. Only in cases such as vehicles was there adequate evidence of ownership and probable value. Even in the case of vehicles one can argue that a pickup is a work vehicle or personal transportation and that can apply to other types of vehicle also.

Well, time to move to FL despite the occasional bad storm............no personal propertly taxes, no state taxes, no sales tax on food.................it's the best!

Doesn't the window sticker say this is a "station wagon"?? Take that to them but it's like everything they tax..."It's the government's money and you sir will not stand in their way of getting it!"





BTW, the speeding ticket is $140 for a 79 in a 55 in Maryland...see below. :oops:

You would be amazed by how much a little complaining goes. . . especially if you complain to a environmental interest group, that they are over-taxing a useful, practical, fuel sipping, SUV alternative, they will raise hell.

In terms of tax revenue coming from xB's. . . you are really talking about pennies to the gov't. It's not a big chunk of money at all. It's worth a fight. Get the media on your side. . . it's an entertaining story, and people like to hear how the gov't likes to cheat them(intentional or not).
