Scion is considering the xD a truer segment replacment for the Gen 1 xB buyers.
The Gen 2 xB is considered a totally different vehicle, not meant to appeal directly to existing Gen 1 owners. It may or may not appeal to them, it was not designed to replace the Gen 1 xB in that regards though.
The manual is fine, I feel that first gear is a little to high and 2nd gear has a little more torque than it needs to have. Otherwise, it is a great safe feeling ride.
I agree, it is very confusing. Last year when it was presented to us this way at big Toyota event, a bunch of us questioned the logic.
We even have it on video. The xD was touted as a xB replacement - the new xB as a new entry - as weird as it sounded then it still sounds.
Maybe it has to do with gas mileage and segment pricing. The xD with the new 1.8 will have all the new safety features the xB offers, except VSC/TRAC. The lighter vehicle with the 1.8 will get excellent gas mileage. The 5-door vehicle will have extra headroom in the back seat. I doubt it will have as much room as the Gen 1 xB offered, we will see in a few months.

It makes sense, in a strange way.
To me, the xB2 is more of a crossover type vehicle. Not as compact; it's just as easily suited as a small SUV.
The xD is more of a city car. More compact, not as thirsty.
Plus, there's no way in hell I'd replace my xB with a xB2, but I could see myself looking at an xD.

im very bitter over some of the xb2 features, but not bout its stock styling or mileage. Since scion is commited to a "wipe the slate clean" design plan, i dont get why the kept the name. Maybe they were afraid of having NO continuity between the cars they release every few years. Imagine if Ford came out with all different cars every 4 years and discontinued all the old ones. Not a huge deal, but a bit confusing to an unfamiliar "just browsing" buyer. guess it is a soild concept from a marketing standpoint.
(BTW: I'm holding out for the new tC replacement )

I've heard from "usually reliable sources" that Scion is indeed looking at the xD as the real xB's replacement.
While it is the right "size" and looks to be a nice vehicle (I like it's looks better than the xB2's, but it does kind of blend in with all the rest of the cars on the road), it loses some of the very strong features of the xB that make it a poor replacement.

Nice Write Up Tomas. This was my favorite quote:
Maybe they'll listen the third time around.
It could be HOW the questions were asked: The questions were always “What should we change?” or “What would you change?” The questions never seemed to be “What under NO circumstances should be changed?”
Always the focus was “What did we get wrong?” never “What did we get right?”
What happened was that 95% of those things ostensibly “wrong” were corrected in the new design, which is absolutely fantastic! :D Thing is, it also meant some of the really great things they got right were lost.

If you like the classic xB for big inside/small outside, and tiny engine, look at the Honda Fit. The Magic Seat gives the rear at least as much useable space as the xB. Still a 1.5L engine. I would have got one but the xB seemed a bit roomier and rode smoother.

The Fit is a nice machine (in the Sport model), and has a lot of good features, but misses out on the same things that the new xD misses on. I've looked at 'em and like 'em (and I've owned several Hondas in the past), but in this case the original xB is a better match for what I want.
Good suggested alternative, though!

the new xb looks like a camry wagon to me, and so does the xd, just a bit smaller, personally if I do decide to buy new I'd probably buy the fit simply because of the aftermarket backing, you can very easily(and still with a warranty) get alot of power, the downside to it is the price 14k for the base, and the next step up is 19k with a 1 year wait (atleast here) they only offer two settings, the base model, and the fully loaded you don't get to pick and choose your options

Yeah--the Fit--like the xB1 and Xa had counterparts well before their introduction into the U.S. That means the mods were already designed and ready to go. It will be interesting to see how long it will take for mods for the new design cars to take shape.
