Does anyone know what the difference is between the Toyota Yaris and the Scion xA? Are they basically the same car mechanically?

Looks to me to be the same.
1.5-liter vvt-i
MacPherson strut front suspension
rear torsion beam suspension
Yaris wheelbase is 96.9 inches
xA wheelbase is 93.3
Yaris passenger volume is 87.1 cu ft
xA is a little less with 86 cu ft
both have cd and mp3 with Ipod
Yaris starting price is under 13,000
xA is a little over 13,000

The yaris and the vitz are the same. The echo and the platz are the same. The xA and the IST are the same. They are all built on the Echo platform.

This is a very valid question. The xA/ist/bB/xB/Yaris/Echo/Vitz are all the same car with different bodies/badges/trim levels/countries where they are/were sold in. If we get a five door hatch version of the Yaris, I think the xA is doomed. They may just sell it in a three door and possibly a sedan version, however, and allow the xA to be the lone five door in this segment.
