Default Do our bumpers have a protective film?

So about 2 weeks ago I took off my safety sticker and put a metal hook to place it on my license plate. When I did this I noticed a square outline around where the sticker was placed on the rear bumper... I didnt give it much thought and I just thought it was adhesive that would come off after cleaning it.

Now heres the bad part... This past friday I got into an accident and the whole driver side rear bumper was pushed in. The intresting thing was when I look at the area that was dented in, there is a think almost paper thick layer of clear film around it. I took my scion to the body shop and all the painters/workers were blown away, they have never seen it before. A few minutes later another painter passed by and said that my bumper was probably damaged before I bought it and the dealership did some kind of work on it... Im guessing this is true becuz in the area where the safety sticker was there is no protective film like I said, it was just an outline. Under the safety sticker was the -real- clear coat the painter told me.

Anyone know if Scion xB 2008 come with a film layer on the bumper? If not I need to talk to my dealership in selling me a previously damaged bumper...

I have a 2008 (mfg 4/2007) and neither bumper fascia has a film over the paint.

I just bought a 2010 and mine has one on the rear bumper that goes around the whole thing. It's a paint protector that keeps it from getting chipped from little pebbles I believe.

I've noticed it too, take a look at the very corner edge of the bumper where it meets the quarter panels and fenders and you'll see that the bumper material sharpens off into an angle. But just before the angle, you can see a rounded off edge that is raised a bit, looks like there's some type of film applied to the bumper before being painted.

Well, if there ever was a film on the rear, it must have been removed when the dealer installed my bumper protector applique'. The left rear corner was scraped in an accident last week and I'd be able to tell if there was a film over it. I've removed the front a couple times, done some touch ups, and installed a lower overlay and I'm satisfied it doesn't have one either. But still, if there had been one, the dealer could have taken it off. They were using the car as a demo.
