Default Interior hood latch catastrophe.

Hi All. I searched around and didn't find anything that quite addresses what I have going on at the moment. I hope I am posting in the correct room.

Super low mileage 2015 xB. I pulled my hood latch the other day and the hood did not pop so I put some extra tension on the cable with my finger from behind the latch and it did not pop. Instead, the white nylon "L" shaped bracket broke. Now I am left with this mess. I did get the hood open by pulling the cable from inside with a plier and everything under the hood seems normal. Anyone have a part number for that broken piece (I have searched.) A picture or diagram on how the cable is supposed to be routed there would be a HUGE bonus. Anyone have suggestions on what is going on with the hood not popping with both ends attached? Can the cable get stretched or something?

Wow, the cable looks nasty, wonder what happened to it. Has it seized up?

Finds 17 and 21 might work for you
You can just use the part numbers to find things on the web too if you prefer.

Routing that cable could be hard... I wonder if you could use the old cable to pull the new cable thru??? Has anyone done that here successfully???

Thanks for the reply. So, you are thinking replace the entire cable? The inside-cabin part of it looks so awful because of how I grabbed it with pliers to yank it and pop the hood. Everything under the hood looks normal. The car has only 33k miles on it; I was surprised when the hood didn't pop and thought just putting some extra tension on it would do the trick but that white nylon piece broke when I did that.

That would be a _____ rerouting an entirely new cable. I want to try to figure it out before I do that but can't find the p/n for that white nylon piece inside the cabin just behind the pull. Ugh. Frustrating.

There's no way I'd use that cable if you've had issues with it before and with the way it looks now...might be a PITA but it'll be a whole lot better to do it once and be done with it.

I'm betting that white nylon piece is likely part of the pull and not available separately, might be worth combing eBay for that.

This link to rockauto seems to indicate the cable is just that.
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/....4l+l4,3310527 Just put " hood latch cable " into the search box and it shows a cable without the nylon

The release latch 53601-02020-B1 will likely have that nylon piece included.

I am thinking it is this: Toyota 53601-52010-B3 Lever Sub-Assy, Hood Lock Control

Yes, good find.
I do think the cable will need to be replaced though or the nylon piece will break in short order.

Speaking of nylon failures... I had a 2000 Honda accord... it had 4 window regulator failures in the time I had it. Only 1 covered under warrantee. All due to nylon failures, either a wheel broke in the rear, or a cable pulled thru in the front. In the end, I reinforced one of the front ones with a steel bracket, but never got to test it as I passed the car along...
