We are on two diff planets with this one. Knock sensors, to retard timing if needed, are quite common.

This engine, unlike most new cars Ive owned over the years, does not appear to be a knocker. I have not had it in hot temps yet though.

I was curious as to if it did, because like I said, I had not heard any ping. In the past 10 years, I have had two ford rangers (4cyl and 6), a v6 tacoma, a 4cyl sonata, the xB, and two saturns. All had some pinging, except for this xB.

I wonder if it is just that good, or it is retarding the timing. I do not hear any though.

 

It has one. It's located on the backside of the engine

 

Fuel octane and the quality of it along with spark plug condition and tuning will determine and dictate the knock threshold of the engine. Toyota/Scion does a good job of keeping these motors in check against det.
