The car just made over 5000 miles and my mpg is anywhere from 26-27. I average about 400 miles a week driving in the bay area. Lots of hills too.

I have been getting 28-30 MPG driving about 50/50 ciry highway. I did a long trip at going 60-65 mph and got 36 MPG. One thing to note is this MPG is not measured by the onboard computer which I have found to be about 8% higher then the actual milage except on the one long trip when the computer was dead accurate.

xBWill, are you doing any hyper miling or just driving smart? Obviously not driving normal Also how many miles you have on the car? I have noticed a lot of people suddently getting better mileage and wonder if the xB just has a real long break in time.

I am not hypermiling, just driving pretty normal I think. I don't floor it every time I accelerate but I do floor it a few times a tank going all the way to redline. The car has plenty of power to conserve on fuel and that's the habit I'm into. I did have a tank that was pretty rough, raced around a lot and so on. That one I got 27 mpg. I just had the TRD CAT and exhaust put on and seem to be getting better mpg with it. I am yet to fill up so hard to know for sure.

We just clocked 1,000 miles on or 2009 xB. We have been getting ~24mpg in the city. On vacation (12 hours highway, loads of West Virginia mountain roads, and a little city) we averaged 33.7mpg.

87.5% highway, 12.5% city, reverse commute so no traffic, no AC. My previous best of 34.1 was under the same conditions. The gain is mostly due to the grill block I added.

I monitor the coolant temp with my scangauge and the temp never exceeds 190 on my commute even on days when the outside temp is over 90. Besides if you look in your top grill you will see about 1" to 0.5" of the radiator sticking up, also you will see above the radiator there is a plastic backing which prevents air from escaping. This backing traps the air moving into the front of the car and causes drag. The grill block directs air around the car and eliminates the drag from the trapped air. The block is made from Coroplast (corrugated plastic), which cost me $30 for a 4'X8' sheet and black duct tape.

My previous best mpg was 34.1. So, the grill block gave me a 1.4 mpg gain.

I would not suggest doing a modification like this unless you have a scangauge or something similar to precisely measure your coolant temps.

how cool would it be if they had made the xB more fuel efficient with some of these improvements to begin with. if the xb was 200lbs less, and had a 2.0L making just slightly less hp, and had some aerodynamics tricks it would have been far more successful in the market. Personally i love the car but dont own one cause it really doesnt save me enough money on gas.

It would be cool to see if you could offer an after market hood where the middle is significantly lower for aerodynamics. Or have a pass through vent in the hood.

An under body pan is something OEMs could offer that would significantly improve the aerodynamics of a car and reduce fuel consumption. Rear wheel skirts have a significant impact. Designing a bumper that does not catch wind, the fake brake ducts on the xB are something that could have been designed out for efficiency. Smaller side mirros or cameras. Replacing the side mirrors with cameras would be a fun project. To see the effect of your mirrors drive around for a tank of gas with your passenger mirror turned in, the effect is noticeable. Internal radio antenna. Flush door handles. There are so many things that could be done to improve fuel efficiency. On the flip side all of these aerodynamic improvements also can help your car accelerate faster. The easier your car can go through the air the easier it is to accelerate.

yep. Its just frustrating that Toyota keeps this 2.4L 4cylinder around still. as far as 4s go it really is a gas hog and not very performance minded either. The nissan altimas 2.5L makes 175hp/180lbft while getting 23/32 with a car that weighs more. The xB is in an annoying middle ground. I either want it to have a smaller engine with better mpgs, or i would rather it have the camry v6 and sacrifice only 1-2mpg more. For me it is the perfect car with the wrong engine.
