I noticed there was a GPH spike when shifting between gears. Also under certain coasting conditions the GPH will drop to 0.00.

Its should drop to 0 when engine braking or its turning more than 1700 rpms with no throttle input. It should spike at the wrong shift point, shifting too early. I am sure with some tweaking it can have way better fuel economy.

I would tweak it so with zero throttle input and cruse control off it upshifts to keep the engine at 1700 or more rpms so it engine brakes and burns no fuel, but spins the accessories. With cruse on it would behave as normal.

Second, it would use vacuum pressure to decide shift points and take a gear out longer before shifting to next gear. This may lead to more hunting unless it locks and unlock the torque converter instead.

Lastly, if cruse control is on, it should be less agressive and upshift more or unlock the torque converter.

I have been driving my new used tacoma with super charger, automatic and vacuum/boost meter. It seems to shift more on throttle position vs vacuum. Seems crazy to run 6psi boost in 4th gear at 50mph. It should upshift to 3rd and unlock the torque converter and turn more rpms, but I was using the NORMAL mode. I got 220 miles on 13 gallons of high test gas. Trying this run on the power mode. So far seems to shift more than boost when accelerating, so its running more on engine that charger.

Relating to more fuel efficient cruise control you might find this thread interesting

Thanks, this car is one where using cruse control actually wastes more fuel than it saves. I know on another forum they hacked the servo so it can be locked at a certain throttle position, however since all roads are not level and the wind is constantly changing, I dont see how that is a safe mod.

I like the idea of turning down the gain, so you slow on hills like the big rigs do.

By my calculation I got 24.5 on my last tank. Thats about half the time highway and half the time city.

You're right on target. I drive about 80% on highways, and have averaged just under 27mpg over the 35k miles on mine.

Im prob 90% hwy, and getting a minimum 28 is not hard. On this last tank, I did a little more city and still hit 27.7, and that was with getting on it a few times.

IMHO, accelerating in a way to where it never revs over 2500 when shifting, and staying at a decent speed on the interstate, will give this little box very good mpgs.

Just took a 300 mile trip to Washington DC, 70-75mph and some stop and go city, 30.2 mpg's. My work week commute, which is 20 miles city and 50 miles hwy every day, still getting 28.0 to 28.5.

Love this car.

Dont get me wrong, its fun to shift at 6 grand, but that eats your fuel economy just like idling does. I am still getting 30mpg. I use like below light pressure letting the car get up to speed by shifting gears. About 37mph you see the rpms dip 500 rpms. That means the torque converter has locked, continuning with light pressire it seems to accelerate faster at 500 rpms less. Too much pressure it will turn off and waste fuel.

The cruse control is too agressive and it helps more to use your foot than it. It would be great if we can turn down the gain on that.

Be it automatic or rmanual, the key is light pressure on the accelerator and shifts early enough to not strain the engine, but not waste fuel on rpm either!
