The simple fact is, if you do some periodic oil analysis on a weight for comparison, it'll tell you the answer. I get someone people cannot let got of 5w-30, but...

I've compared 0w-20, 5w-20 and 5w-30 in both my xB and Sonata. All performed well, so if I turned around and said "0w-20" is too thin, I'd be full of it.

Facts are facts. Now, once my Sonata hit around 80k miles it started to consume a little so I stepped from 5w-20 to 5w-30, and the consumption was greatly reduced, so the Sonata gets Mobile1 5w-30 and the xB still gets Mobil1 5w-20.

So 5W-20 remains your choice, how about that, it's my choice too! For those that prefer 0W-20W, more power to them (and good luck) !

Its my choice because it is the easiest to find in large containers. Nothing more nothing less, the "good luck" statement implies risk and is ridiculous.

You need to spend some time doing your own analysis or reading some oil websites. Facts are facts, problem is, most boards are riddled with "pulled out of my butt" or "was true 20 years ago".

Yeah, no doubt you're right, 0W-20 is surely the better choice! Engine tolerances are so improved there's clearly no advantage to the greater slipperiness of the heavier weight oils.

0W-20 with Mobile Syn and K&N oil filter. When you are winding out gears on the back road, taking 2nd/3rd gears out for long walks through the rev counter, you take few chances with "heavy" oil. More so in the summer.

Also I get better MPG with 0W-20 Syn/K&N Oil filter/K&N Air filter and 93 Octane than I do with conventional 5w-20/standard air and oil filter/89-93 octane.

Here's a link to the class action lawsuit in regards to the oil consumption on the Scion xB and other Toyotas with the same engine. I encourage those with the problem to submit their names to the law firm:

Class Action suits will just make money for the lawyers. If the customers do get something it will be on the order of a coupon worth xxxxx dollars off of a new Toyota purchase. I'm not saying that people shouldn't go to that site and register with them, it's just unlikely that the owners will ever get their engines fixed.

Good Luck!

Angry Oil Consumption

Good luck with this engine. Mine had no problems until about 62000 miles. I am suspecting the issue with the piston ring and the TSB will show up suddenly on almost all these vehicles. Anyway, one day while braking I noticed the oil light came on. It was a little more than 2.5 quarts low. After taking it to dealer they filled it and said to monitor it. Well it did it again, so they filled and said to bring it back after 1000 miles. Well at 250 miles, I check the oil and the dealer had OVER filled it by about a little over a quart! So i took pictures and documented every 250 miles. When I took it in it was about level. Then I showed them the pictures of it being over full at 250 miles in and they said that it was still in normal range. They said to check it again, this time, I had them check the oil level with me. I do have a Toyota extended warranty 'till 75,000 miles (It currently has 71,000 - that's how long this game with the dealer and Toyota has been going on!!!).
I almost never buy extended warranties, but since I like to keep my vehicles for 10 years, I thought it was a good idea and that this one would protect me since it was backed by Toyota.
If there is no resolution, there will be no more Toyotas for me sadly... and I was a staunch supporter when they were getting the bad publicity about sticking accelerator pedals and recalls...

Good Luck!
Unfortunately true. Experienced that before with other class action lawsuits...

Great! I think I'll try that after this oil consumption test they are running.

So, my xb (I thought) completely eats oil.

Running 0w20, I burn at least a quart every 1000-1500 miles.

I've been running thicker oil to try and counteract this, and it has helped a bit.

But...I just changed my oil yesterday. I had been running 5w20. Three thousand miles on it, dipstick was completely dry.

I decided that before taking it in, I would get ahold of a friend of mine who is a toyota tech and see what he thought.

He was very aware of the situation, and told me not to take it in yet, as it would not qualify.

Seriously? Burning two quarts of oil in three thousand miles isn't "excessive"?!?

I don't doubt that he knows what he's talking about, he actually told me to keep driving it and to bring it in in a few months, in case the oil consumption has increased.

As is though, I apparently won't qualify, and it will be logged that I don't qualify.

Busted my Engine and had it repaired after they had a technician go and see the car from headquarters and confirmed that the damage to the engine was from lack of lubrication But again the person at the maintenance said i was lucky since i have always done all my maintenance done with Toyota here a link i found

Default 95K - No Oil Burning

2008 XB, Auto, 94.8K miles, religous 5K changes with Mobil 1 0-20, Fram filters. Less than .5qt lost between changes, and this .5qt loss was only on last 2 changes starting at 85K.
