Default Oil Consumption

I used to love my car So when I first got my 08 xb I loved it. Love love loved it. Roomy. Perfect for me and my daughters. Well now I got this oil consumption issue I am dealing with. And from the looks of it I may be just sc***ed. I saw the TSB was sent out a long time ago and that it was covered under the powertrain warranty up until 6years/60000k miles. Well both have passed for me. Any advise on what to do??? I purchased an extended warranty when I bought it from a dealer. The warranty company said I have to do the oil consumption test and inform them of the results. After that they may require the engine to be torn down and that I am responsible for that cost regardless of the outcome. I am just beside myself right now. I bought this car thinking I would be worry free as the research I had done had shown that Scions were very reliable cars and would last a very long time.

I feel sick to my stomach...

I have an update!!! I actually found this while searching online tonight! Toyota has extended the warranty until 2016 so that if you are effected you can get this fixed at no cost!

What would be considered excess oil consumption? Also, does oil consumption depend upon whether using conventional vs synthetic oil?

I got one also. I actually just took my car on Saturday for the second part of the test and my car qualified. My info has been sent to Toyota to have me on the list to receive parts. My Pistons will be replaced at no charge. I went in after 1200 miles and they had to add at least a quart of oil.

Sorry to hear about the excessive oil consumption on your xB. If you have not received a notification from Scion, give them a call at 866-707-2466 to see if your car is included in that warranty enhancement program.

They can give you detailed information. ^YG

How much oil does the engine need to burn to qualify?

I had the test done, it burned 1 quart in 1000 miles, and I was told it didn't qualify.

It has to be over 1 quart in 1100 miles. I know because I just passed. At 1104 miles I burned exactly one quart so I'm going to wait and redo the test but wait until I'm closer to the 1300 miles top end range so that it burns more than the one quart.

Our owner's manual states that this rate of oil consumption is normal. Which surprised me because I remember the oil consumption issue and I thought that was the guideline for failure.

First of all my 2000 tacoma prerunner with 260k original miles does not come close to consuming as much oil as my 09 xb. A quart of oil every 1000 miles is normal. So when I change my oil I add 4 quarts of new synthetic oil and by the time I change my again it's normal to have added another 4+ quarts? That's absurd. Also when I go in for my test and the dealership tops off my oil are they going to use the same brand and weight synthetic oil that I put in? Every oil company adds their own secret amount of additives and conditioners to their oil. So mixing brands can be harmful to my engine. Do I bring my own oil and give it to the tech to top off?
