Anyone else have this issue? If I'm in 2nd gear I can grab the shift **** and move it to the left about 1/2 an inch.

I'm wondering if this is the reason why I have issues with 2nd gear at times where I can get a "feels like nothing is there" shift and other times it feels like a "binding/lockout" feeling when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

I only have this problem with 2nd when upshifting from 1st. No other gear has this play as 2nd does...Anyone know how I can fix this?

 

is this on your stock shifter or did u put an aftermarket one in?

 

What have you changed from original equipment associated with your shift linkage (that includes bushings)?

 

Everything is stock minus the carbon fiber trd shift ****

 

I presuming it's pretty easy to move that extra 1/2" and you don't feel that with first. I'm guessing you can also feel it with the engine off and clutch pedal up. I don't see how the shifter motion can fail to get to the transmission-end cable bushings, but I suppose there could be something funny with the rear bushing (closest to the firewall) that handles the side-to-side motion. I'd try inspecting it and checking the feel by manually pulling the center stud towards the driver side, if it moves differently in that gear from first gear, then it sounds to me like something's amiss in the transmission. If it feels the same as in first, and first feels OK at the shifter, then I'd probably try replacing the bushing, but it would really seem strange if first and second feel the same side-to-side at the rear transmission shift stud, but different at the cabin shift lever.

 

My 2010 is the same way. In 2nd gear it seems like there's the most play. Also when I am on the freeway and take my foot off the gas. the shifter moves up about 1/2 inch. and back when I step back on the gas. I didn't know a cable FWD shifter did this. I currently have 16,800 miles....bought brand new Feb 16th 2010. I just always remind myself how cheap the car was.

 

Some fore/aft shifter motion while driving is not that unusual, my Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX did and still does that big time -- and it's not a defect. Some side-to-side play isn't necessarily a defect either, but I would expect it to be similar for each gear pair (1st & 2nd, 3rd & 4th, 5th & reverse).
