Default serpentine belt

Today while driving to work the battery light went on, so I touhgt the battery was dying, since we had some freezing weather the weekend. After work, i noticed the instrument lights and wipers working too slow and no hot air, and while driving in the freeway I see the temp gauge wasnt working either ; my friend had replaced the water pump and serpentine belt 5 month ago or so; in my way home loss some power and right at my apt. Entrance the steering wheel stopped working so i took me a couple minutes to park...when I opened the hood, i saw the serpentine belt snapped and some oil leaking over the engine block....its all I could see with my flashlight.....what could've go wrong? If the serpentine belt was pretty much new!!! Does driving the box without the water pump working for about 25 miles would damage the engine!!?? Why is there oil leaking!!!??? I'm freaked out right now maybe the SC got some damage too!!!!!!!!! :'( Help!!!! Please!!!!
